CONTINENTAL CONFERENCE
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 2, NORTH PENN 1 (OT)
The Patriots have been on the short end of some heartbreaking losses, but they turned the tide on Wednesday, eking out an overtime win when Marissa Glatt (Maggie Ryder assist) scored just 33 seconds into overtime.
“It was pretty quick,” coach Christina Kemmerer said of the ending. “The game could have gone either way.
“North Penn is definitely a good team. They’re having a tough time right now, but the other teams shouldn’t take them lightly because they did a lot of really nice things.”
The two teams battled to a scoreless halftime tie, and in the opening half, East goalie Samantha Grzegorczyk came up with a save of a Maidens’ penalty stroke.
Glatt (Emily Ofsa assist) put the Patriots on the scoreboard at the 16:33 mark of the second half, but three minutes later, Shannon Talbot answered with an unassisted goal for the Maidens, setting the stage for OT.
The win was the first of the season for the Patriots (1-4, 1-2 SOL).
“It was amazing,” Kemmerer said. “They’ve been working so hard. You could see the frustration after two or three games go by when they’re not being rewarded for their hard work.
“Tonight the tables definitely turned a little bit. They played awesome. They really worked together as a team.”
The first-year coach pointed to the efforts of her defense as key.
“Our defense really has kind of pulled together,” Kemmerer said. “Each game we’re not sure who’s going to be where. We’ve had some medical issues, and that’s made it tough for the kids, but they really pulled together tonight. They wanted this game.”
Kemmerer went on to acknowledge the solid performances of defenders Alex Law and Jordan Sanocki.
“Kim Underkoffler and Katt Miller really communicated well with our goalkeeper, creating a strong defense,” the Patriots’ first-year coach said. “Maggie Stella, Maggie Ryder and Marissa Glatt worked together both in regulation and overtime to move the ball up the field, using excellent passing patterns to create options and goals in the circle.
“Maggie Stella plays midfield for us, and she really individually has been working hard on things like stick skills and body control, and she did a great job tonight.”
The Maidens saw their record drop to 0-3 in the league (0-5 SOL).
SOUDERTON 2, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 0
The Indians knocked the Bucks from the ranks of the undefeated, rebounding from their disappointing overtime loss to Hatboro-Horsham two days earlier to earn the big win.
“We really stepped up our play today,” coach Lauren Whiteside said. “We really connected as a team today, and it was evident in our passing game.
“We were able to move the ball quickly and efficiently through the midfield and into the offensive circle. We have some girls that have great shots, and we were really looking to use them today. Once we got into the circle, we were able to draw fouls and cause corners.”
The Indians got on the scoreboard early when Alyssa Ziegler connected at the 27:26 mark of the first half, using a Bekah Hershey assist. Tara Maloney’s goal at the 19:01 mark of the second half (Ziegler assist) all but sealed the Bucks’ fate.
Whiteside credited her defense for its strong showing in the shutout.
“We have been working on team defense and moving as a unit, and it clicked today,” the first-year coach said. “We got back on defense quickly and supported each other clearing the ball to the side.
“CB West never gave up at all. They had a lot of shots on goal that our goalie (Jen Bergey) was able to turn away. Bekah Hershey was solid for us on both offense and defense. She was patient and confident and stopped a few breakaways from happening as well as assisting on a goal. We can always count on Bekah to be there for support. She has a great eye for the entire field and can see the passes that need to happen.”
The Indians held an edge in shots (10-8) and corners (11-8). Bergey was credited with seven saves while defender Meghan McDermott had a defensive save in the first half for the Indians, who improved to 2-1 in the league (2-2 overall).
“Every game we continue to improve, and that is all we as coaches can ask for,” Whiteside said. “We feel like we haven’t played our best yet, but we definitely made a good showing today in our very competitive league.”
The Bucks also are 2-1 in league play (5-1 overall).
“We couldn’t come back, and we were struggling to block up,” said West coach Casey Hughes, herself a Souderton grad. “Souderton was playing great ‘D.’
“Our players are looking to learn from this, and the pressure of a winning streak is alleviated.”
CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 4, QUAKERTOWN 1
The Titans remained undefeated with their win over the Panthers.
