CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 3, NORTH PENN 0
The Titans needed less than a minute to get on the scoreboard in Monday’s SOL contest and never looked back on their way to a convincing win over the Maidens. Mackenzie Harding, who had assists on both of her team’s goals in Friday’s 2-0 win over CB West, proved that she can put the ball in the cage as well. The senior midfielder received the insert pass from Megan Hamilton on her team’s second corner, pushed the ball into the circle and slammed home a corner shot to put the Maidens on top 58 seconds into the game.
“That was huge for us,” Harding said of getting the early lead. “It really just gives us a boost. Sometimes it goes our way, and sometimes it doesn’t.”
Everything went the Titans’ way in Monday’s contest, and before the game was 10 minutes old, they had a 2-0 lead, thanks to a goal by Rachel Gorman (Hamilton assist).
The Titans took that lead into halftime and then added a goal on their first corner of the second half. The sequence began with Maiden goalie Chessa Kownurko turning away a laser shot by Harding, but junior Corrine Kenney (Gorman assist) was there to put away the rebound.
The Titans’ defense did the rest, holding the Maidens’ at bay for the duration. While the Titans pounded the Maidens with 19 shots and drew 18 corners, the Maidens managed just one corner. That came in the game’s closing moments. Shannon Talbot took a shot from the top of the circle, but it was deflected out of play by a Titan defender long before it reached the goal line.
“We always try and talk in the back,” said Jess Schmidt, who anchors the Titans’ deep defense. “It always starts with our goalie Sarah (Zesotarski). She’s great. I can hear her talking all the time, and I transfer her messages throughout the whole field. It just keeps us organized, and it doesn’t give them an opportunity to have corners and get down.”
Lost in the shuffle of the loss was the 14-save effort of Kownurko, who delivered the defensive play of the game on South’s second corner of the second half. The senior keeper made a diving stick save on the left post of a shot heading for the cage. North Penn’s Cassidy Barrow also was credited with a defensive save on the goal line late in the second half.
The tone for Monday’s game, according to North Penn coach Shannon McCracken, was set very early.
“We’re a team that at times will let the other team set the tone, and that’s unfortunate,” the Maidens’ coach said. “That especially was true tonight.”
One short week ago, the Maidens were sharing the top spot in the Continental Conference with a 2-0 record, but since that time, they dropped back-to-back overtime losses to Quakertown and Hatboro-Horsham – not exactly a confidence builder heading into Monday’s contest.
“Those overtime losses are in the back of the girls’ minds right now, and this was a tough team to come against after two tough overtime losses,” McCracken said. “As much as you think your team gets over that, it is in the back of their minds, so I think that set them back on their heels.
“We can’t win when we give up (18) corners and get one ourselves. That’s way too many, especially since that is CB South’s strongest advantage. They have excellent corners. We talked going into the game about not giving up corners because we knew they had great corners, but we did not execute our game plan tonight.”
While the Maidens fell to 2-3 in the league (4-4 overall), the Titans upped their league mark to 5-0 (7-0 overall).
The Maidens will host Central Bucks West on Tuesday while CB South will travel to Souderton for a night game Tuesday.
