SOUDERTON 1, NORTH PENN 0
Emily Myers (Alyssa Ziegler assist) scored with 8:08 remaining in the first half to give the Indians a 1-0 lead over their archrivals. Ziegler set up her own game winner with a drive across goal that ricocheted to Ziegler on the left post. Myers was there to tap it home.
The Indians dominated play in the first half as the Maidens rarely took the ball beyond midfield. The Maidens drew just two corners and took one shot during corner play that was turned away by goalie Jen Bergey.
“We came into the game so excited for our league opener because they’re our neighborhood rivals,” coach Lauren Whiteside said.
Things changed in a hurry in the second half as the Maidens, after a timeout, began to apply some serious pressure, drawing five consecutive corners during one stretch. The Indians’ defense and Bergey withstood the challenge, holding on for the 1-0 win.
“I don’t know what happened at halftime, but they stepped up their game, and we did not,” Whiteside said. “They started passing more, and we kind of got stuck in a rut where we were unsure where our teammates are because we’re playing with a new lineup and younger girls.
“They seemed to pick up their game, and we were left behind. We hung on, but it certainly got dramatic towards the end.”
Whiteside, who notched her first win at the helm, lauded the efforts of several players.
“Bekah Hershey played phenomenal,” the Indians’ coach said of her center back. “She can run up, she can run back, and she was very vocal in the midfield, talking to the girls and telling them what to do and also stepping up to the ball. We knew we could count on her in the middle, and she would dish it off to the right.
“Abby Gabriel, our center forward, did a phenomenal job this game. We have been working with her, trying to get her to cut back to the ball, and she really stepped up her game today, which allowed us to have three or four breakaways. We couldn’t finish, but we were really working and passing to each other, which was good.”
The Indians held a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal, but the Maidens had an 11-6 edge in corners. Bergey was credited with six saves for the Indians while Chessa Kownurko turned away six shots for the Maidens.
While the Maidens fell to 0-2 on the young season (0-1 SOL), the Indians evened their record at 1-1 (1-0 SOL).

HATBORO-HORSHAM 3, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 2 (OT)
Colby Eldridge (Casey Swezey assist) scored at the 11:20 mark of overtime to give the Hatters the dramatic win in arguably the game of the day in the SOL.
“It was a great game – it was back and forth,” Hatboro coach Laura Swezey said. “You know how coaches always say, ‘It could have gone either way’ - this game could have gone either way.
“They have some nice all-around players, and it was a good game. It was a very slow field, but the kids were getting off some really nice lifts and drives. We have been practicing a lot with just getting those hits off, looking up and putting the ball in a space. You have to change your game up when you play on grass. We had to play a little more long ball, but it was a good game.”
Twice the Hatters rallied from a deficit to knot the score. Katt Miller (Marissa Glatt assist) scored off a corner at the 28:10 mark of the first half, but the Hatters knotted the score when Eldridge connected at the 9:09 mark with a Swezey assist.
The Patriots broke that tie with a goal by Sarah Thiroway on an insert from the post by Glatt at the 25:38 mark of the second half. That lead held until Carlie Baldus (Maggie Leisch assist) scored with just under three minutes remaining to knot the score 2-2, setting the stage for OT.
“When it comes down to 7v7, I feel pretty good because we have a fast team,” Swezey said. “We played in a couple of scrimmages where we did the 7v7, and the kids really pick it up.”
Swezey acknowledge the solid outings of several players.
“Colby Eldridge had a big game for us,” the Hatters’ coach said. “My backs, Jenna Cutilli and Jane Henry, did a nice job of getting the ball out. They were instrumental in getting the ball out of their circle.”
East coach Christina Kemmerer also had high praise for several of her players.
“Alex Law had a tremendous defensive save and played tenaciously,” the first-year coach said. “Madi Steuber communicated well with her teammates and really stepped to the ball throughout the game.”
The Patriots (0-2) had an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners while the Hatters (1-0) held a 9-8 edge in shots on goal.
