HATFIELD -- If you look up firepower in the dictionary, you might find, somewhere in all the definitions, a mention of the Pennridge ice hockey team.
That’s because the Rams have a lot of firepower. And they exhibited it Tuesday night at Ice World in a 6-1 victory over Central Bucks East in the opening game of the Class AA Flyers Cup tournament.
Pennridge pretty much settled things in the first period, scoring four goals in the space of less than six minutes. Two of them came off the stick of forward Michael Walker with assists from his linemates, Eric Slater and Pat McGinley.
"I think we started out a little bit shaky but then we got in the groove," said Walker. "We wanted to win this game so we started playing well.
"It's the most important thing. If you don't come out firing, then you give the other team a chance to come back at you.
"We shut them down and then put up four and that was the end of them. The boys were buzzing."
With head coach Tom Coyne away on business, assistant coach Jeff Montagna took over behind the bench.
"We wanted them to come out a lot more aggressive than they did last week against this team (in a 4-1 win)," Montagna said. "I thought the first four or five minutes they didn't and I kind of got on them.
"Once they got that going, we just kept going back to them. CB East just couldn't handle them."
East coach Ken Latchum had to stand and watch Walker, McGinley and Slater do their thing.
"Slater, he's got a helluva shot," Latchum said. "His line is probably one of the top lines in the league. We tried to shadow him in the first period, but you just can't keep him down."
Walker realizes what he's got on his line.
"I've been playing with Slater for nine years now," he said. "We've been on the same travel team.
"He and I have been clicking forever. It's a fire line. The rest of the lines were getting lots of shots too."
That they were. Pennridge fired 48 shots on the CB East goalies, Matt Ogonowski (who just played the first period) and Chris McIntyre.
"Obviously, Pat's line, Slater and Walker, they score a lot for us," said Montagna. "For the really first time since we've been here, the other lines came on offensively.
"I thought that, for a 15-minute stretch, was the best we have played as a team. All three lines were generating offense and playing defense."
Walker got things going for the Rams in the first period, scoring at the 9:41 mark off assists from McGinley and Slater. He also notched the third goal of the period with assists going to -- you guessed it -- Slater and McGinley.
McGinley got one of his own, the second tally of the opening stanza, and Slater finished up the period, scoring with 30 seconds left on the clock. Those four shots were part of the 18 Pennridge put on net as opposed to only four for the Patriots.
In the second period, McGinley accounted for the only goal. He took a beautiful pass from Matthew Guinette for his second goal of the game.
East netted its only goal of the night in the third as Colin Quinn beat Ram goalie Luke Stranick on the power play. Evan Kehoe got that one back for Pennridge, also on the power play.
But it was that early firepower that propelled the Rams to the victory.
"It's one and done," Montagna said about the Flyers Cup. "You can't worry about what happened last week, what happened the last time against CB East.
"You've got to put them away. That's what we talked about early -- come out and bury this team early and don't let up."
Believe me, the Rams didn't let up.

Avon Grove had the better of play in the second period and held a 12-6 advantage in shots.
