Flying Cardinals Improves to 5-0 With a Win Over Norristown
By Jesse Bernstein for SuburbanOneSports.com
Senior quarterback John Derr smiled when asked if his coach said anything particularly inspiring before the Flying Cardinals drubbing of the Norristown Eagles.
“Yeah, basically he was just telling us to not come out, like, too hot-headed, ‘cause we’re 4-0 and they’re 0-4,” Derr said. “He didn’t want us to come out all cocky, he wanted us to come out and play like we usually do.”
UD did just that, scoring 37 points, right in line with their seasonal average.
Derr, one of UD’s biggest offensive strengths, said, “It was definitely just execution.
(We) just have to execute our plays. Routes were good, everything was open, and that’s just how we did it the whole game”On Derr, coach Bret Stover said, “He’s a senior, he’s doing everything you expect out of your senior quarterback. Second-year starter, he’s poised, and it seems like the game has slowed down a lot for him this year.
Besides Derr, junior running back John Lee - coming off of a game in which he had 13 rushes for 125 yards and a touchdown - and sophomore running back Kaleif Lee combined for four touchdowns on the ground.
On Lee, Coach Stover extolled the running back’s skill level, while noting that, “the guys up front are making him look good…[Senior offensive lineman] Tyler Berish does a great job for us up front, and our sophomores that are in there, and [senior} Patrick Echevarria, our center, does a great job.”
Kaleif Lee was happy to talk about the guys paving the way for him. “My line did the job…and made it all happen.”
The Flying Cardinals are 5-0 overall (2-0 SOL), and the Eagles are 0-5 (0-2 SOL).

PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 49, CHELTENHAM 21
Before Cheltenham was even able to record a first down, Plymouth Whitemarsh quarterback Connor Hanlon had already scored two touchdowns. By the time the game was over, Hanlon had run for three touchdowns, passed for two more and helped the Colonials to their third consecutive win.
Hanlon ran in touchdowns from one, 25 and eight yards out in the first half to help the Colonials (3-2, 2-0) build an early 21-0 lead.
“This is a really big win for us,” PW coach Dan Chang said. “We would like to think we can build on this momentum. We’re getting better every week, and I was very happy with our execution and we’re hoping that we can build on this win.”
Despite allowing Cheltenham (2-3, 1-1) to score a couple touchdowns late in the first half, PW continued to increase upon its lead, as Jose Vega ran in a score from 38 yards out and Hanlon found Brian Afflick for a seven-yard touchdown to give the Colonials a three-touchdown lead at the half.
“We turned the ball over the first two times we had the ball,” Cheltenham coach Joe Gro said. “That’s not a really good start. We haven’t been making those kinds of turnovers before tonight. When we were in situations where we needed to make a play, we made them, but we allowed the separation early with the score.”
Hanlon and Brian Afflick teamed up for a seven-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter. Later, junior Ray Clarkson would run in a touchdown from 19 yards out to put the Colonials up by 35 points, implementing the mercy rule with 42 seconds to play in the third.
“It was huge for us to get up early,” Hanlon said. “We wanted to build a nice lead and get the momentum going from the start and we did. This win was huge for us and after two straight losses, to get these last few wins gives us momentum going into next week.”
Hanlon finished with a huge day under center, passing for 115 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 68 yards and three touchdowns on only eight carries. He also didn’t turn the ball over a single time all night.
“Connor is consistent for us week in and week out,” Chang said. “He makes great decisions for us on the field and he executes the game plan well. He understands it as well as a coach does, which is a huge plus for us.”
Vega also had a big night for the Colonials, rushing 14 times for 122 yards and a touchdown, while also catching two passes for 16 yards and a score. Afflick ran for 52 yards and caught two passes for 24 yards and a score. The Colonials recorded 25 first downs in the game.
Cheltenham was led by Greg Morris, who rushed 10 times for 85 yards and two touchdowns. Chris Myarick caught three passes for 64 yards and a score to lead the Panthers’ receivers.
