CB South & CB West were winners at the 2018 Blue Star Showcase on Sunday at Thomas Jefferson University while Upper Dublin suffered a triple overtime loss to Lancaster Catholic.
CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 49, CAMP HILL 30
There was just too much Alexa Brodie and Haley Meinel for the Lions to handle in Sunday’s non-league game at Thomas Jefferson University. The duo combined for 38 of their team’s 49 points with Brodie leading all scorers with 22 points while Meinel added 16.
Sparked by eight points from Brodie, the Titans led 12-9 after one quarter, and the junior point guard added nine more in the second as the Titans opened up a 26-20 halftime lead. Meinel added seven points in the half.
A 14-4 third quarter by the Titans blew the game wide open. Both Meinel and Brodie had five points – including a three – in the frame.

The Bucks found their offensive stride early in Sunday’s non-league contest at the Blue Star Showcase, exploding for 35 first-half points and opening up a double-digit lead.
Diane Nicholson, who earned MVP honors, jumpstarted the Bucks with 10 points in the first quarter as the Bucks took a 15-8 lead. She added six more in a 20-point second quarter outburst. Sophomore Maddie Burke led the second-quarter charge with a pair of 3-pointers and eight points, propelling the Bucks to a 35-23 halftime lead. Westtown never threatened.
Nicholson led all scorers with 20 points, which included a pair of threes and a 4-for-5 effort at the foul line. A day after sinking five threes in West’s win over CB East, Burke buried four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points. Izzy Treon also finished the game in double figures with 10 points. She scored all of her points in the second half and had seven in the third quarter.

LANCASTER CATHOLIC 49, UPPER DUBLIN 41 (3 OT)
The Crusaders outlasted the Flying Cardinals in Sunday’s non-league game at the Blue Star Classic, winning in triple overtime.
The Cardinals should be forgiven if they ran out of gas in the third OT period in a contest that came less than 24 hours after a heartbreaking loss to archrival Plymouth Whitemarsh in double overtime.
“It’s been a rough couple of days in Upper Dublin-land,” coach Morgan Funsten said. “But we came out and we didn’t sulk about yesterday. We came out and had a great first quarter. It was 11-4 after one quarter.”
The Crusaders outscored the Cards 11-3 in the second quarter to go into halftime with a tenuous 15-14 advantage. They still led 24-22 heading into the final quarter that saw the Cards – behind five points from Jackie Vargas and four from Nicole Kaiser – rally to knot the score at the end of regulation.
It took three overtimes to determine a winner as both teams scored four points in the first OT and six more in the second. The Cards were shut out in the third extra period.
“The game was back and forth,” Funsten said. “It was similar to the PW game. We never had a lead in the third overtime today, but I think in the two fourth quarters yesterday and today and four overtime periods we had opportunities to close out the game – in the last two minutes, we had at least one lead in each of those six periods, so we’re close.
“We’re going to stay positive, we’re going to stick together. We just have to find a way to finish these games. I just have to be better as a coach and the players have to be better. When we figure it out, we’ll be as special as we think we can be.”
Lancaster Catholic didn’t have a Taylor O’Brien – who scored 36 points in a brilliant outing against UD on Saturday, but the Crusaders did have Kiki Jefferson, who did her share of damage, scoring a game-high 25 points after being held off the scoreboard in the first quarter.
“Kiki Jefferson is a 6-1 whatever she wants to be – if she wants to be a post, she can be a post, she can be a point guard if she wants to be a point guard, she can do it all,” Funsten said. “She had 1300 points going into her junior year. She could potentially get close to three thousand points.
“They have another scorer – Lauren Mills, who is 19 points away from a thousand going into today, so they’re a two-headed monster. Coming off of playing PW, we thought we could go in with a similar game plan of keying in on their two top scorers much like PW has with O’Brien and (Lauren) Fortescue. Although we had a quick turnaround to play today, you could make a comparison between the two teams that we played.”
Kaiser led the Cardinals with 12 points while Vargas added 11 and Jess Polin, 10 points.
The two overtime losses, according to Funsten, will serve as learning experiences for the young Cardinals.
“If we found a way to squeak out yesterday’s game and did again today, the only thing we would have been worried about his weekend would have been, ‘What are we eating for dinner. Let’s have a good practice tomorrow and think about school,’” the Cardinals’ coach said. “I think these last two losses hurt but definitely didn’t defeat. My comfort zone will be back tomorrow when I’m back with the girls practicing and just getting back after it and trying to improve.
“I have the luxury at Upper Dublin of having girls who always want to be coached more after losses and want to get better, and this group is no different. These losses definitely hurt this weekend, but we did a ton of good things, and we feel like we’re extremely close to where we want to be.”
Upper Dublin (8-3, 3-1 SOL) will host Springfield Township on Tuesday.
