SOL Girls' Basketball Wrap (12-16-24)

Check out the recaps for SOL girls’ teams in action Monday.

Non-league
SOUDERTON 47, SPRINGFIELD TWP 45

The Spartans took a 29-20 lead into halftime, thanks in no small part to the dominant effort of Ava Culler under the basket. The junior forward accounted for 16 of her team’s points in the half, and the Indians had no answer.
The second half was another story as the Indians outscored the Spartans 27-16. Emily Dick scored all eight of her points in the second half, and Julia Purvy had seven of her 10 points after the intermission.
By the numbers: Purvy’s 10 points led a balanced Souderton attack while Dick, Alaina Picard and Olivia Herron each had eight. Liz Word had seven, and Madison Bealer had six points. Purvy also had a team-high eight rebounds to go along with three steals. Bealer and Dick both had five rebounds. Word had three steals, three blocks and two assists.
Culler’s 20 points led the Spartans.
Souderton coach Lynn Carroll: “We were down 29-20 at halftime. Our shot selection in the first half – we shot 11 2s to 12 3s, and that’s just not the kind of balance that we want. We were able to move the ball around a little bit more in the second half. It was 17 2s to 6 3s. which is really what we want. We made better decisions offensively. The first couple minutes of the third quarter we played great.
“We did some stuff defensively in the second half that we probably should have started the game playing that way, but the kids adjusted. They played with much more intelligence in the second half. We had really nice balanced scoring. We had Julia (Purvy) with 10, we had three people with eight, one with seven, one with six, so that was really nice.”
--Word a spark: “Liz Word was a huge spark off the bench. She was 3-for-3 from the field and had a bunch of deflections, three steals, three blocks. She was really, really working hard, and it was hard to keep her off the floor in the second half.”
--Culler demands attention: “We gave up 29 points in the first half, and 16 of them were (Ava) Culler. She leaps and gets an offensive rebound and puts it back in. She’s so athletic. She gets off the floor quick, and she jumps high, and we knew that. The game plan going in was – we have to limit her offensive rebounds. We really struggled to do it in the first half.
“Then we held her to four points in the second half. That was the difference in the game for the most part. Madison Bealer – I basically tasked her with – ‘The only thing I want you to do is be in position to box her out when the shot goes up.’ Madison was great. (Culler) had a couple of offensive rebounds in the second half, but she killed us in the first half.”

PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 47, UPPER MERION 31
Monday’s game didn’t start on the most promising note for the Colonials, who fell behind 7-0, but they closed out the half with a 19-5 tear to go into halftime with a 19-12 lead. AJ Avery’s six points and five points from Eliza Meersman led the Colonials in a 14-point second quarter.

Plymouth Whitemarsh coach Dan Dougherty: “We missed our first seven shots, plus turned the ball over three times to start the game. Due to Quakertown cancelation, we hadn’t played since Dec. 7, and it showed. We fell behind 7-0 to start the game but then went on a 35-9 run.”
--Props: “(The 35-9 run was) sparked by a Grace Harvey 3 to beat the buzzer at the end of the first and a timely 3 by Eliza Meersman in the second. Kenna Winland, AJ Avery, and Joslyn Perez were all outstanding defensively tonight as well, causing 33 turnovers.”

COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 50, ARCHBISHOP RYAN 23
Sparked by eight points from Kathryn O’Kane, the Golden Hawks opened up a 17-2 lead after one quarter and never looked back on their way to the no-doubt-about-it non-league win.
Eight players contributed scoring, led O’Kane’s 13 points while Fiona Reckner added 11.
Council Rock South coach Steve Polinsky: “It was a good team win for us tonight. Eight players scored for us, and everyone played really well. We pushed the ball and had great pace the whole game.”
--Props: “Kathryn O’Kane had 13 points, but I loved how she ran the team tonight. I know she is a scorer, but she has been selfless in running the point guard position and getting everyone involved. Fiona Reckner played her normal high energy leadership game. She scored 11 points and has been really shooting the ball well this year. We have a lot of shooters who can put the ball in the basket, Emerson Gunther, Sarah and Maria Freeman and Gill Martin.

Up next: Council Rock South (3-3, 0-1 SOL) will host Harry S Truman Tuesday (5:30 pm).
