National Conference

ABINGTON 39, PENNSBURY 25
The Ghosts took a 15-10 lead into halftime but blew the game wide open with a 17-4 third quarter scoring explosion. The win halted a three-game losing streak for the Ghosts, who jumped out of the gate to a 5-0 start this season.
The Ghosts, according to coach Dan Marsh, came into the game with a simple game plan.
“Our objective was to stop their sophomore,” the Ghosts’ coach said of Falcon sophomore Sajanna Bethea. “We did a pretty good job on her. She only had three points.
“Our offense was not pretty, and that’s kind of been our theme all year, but our defense was very good tonight. They really didn’t get anything going. The most they got in a quarter was 11, and that was in the fourth quarter.”
By that time, the game was already pretty much decided as the Ghosts took a 32-14 lead into the final quarter.
“I think we started executing a little better in the third quarter,” Marsh said. “We turned them over a little bit more. I think we wore them down, and we were able to get some transition buckets.
“We finally started making some shots. We were 3-for-12 from the foul line in the first half. We were getting opportunities – we were getting it inside, and then we weren’t finishing from the free throw line. We were missing some easy shots, but you have to give them credit for playing good defense.”
Aiyannah Peal, who surpassed the 1,000-point mark in the second quarter, led all scorers with 15 points. The Ghosts also received contributions from Sarah Listenbee (8 points), Deja Rawls (7 points) and Michael Harris (6 points).
The Falcons were led by the 12-point effort of Jae Jackson.

COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 42, NESHAMINY 24
Alex Wheatley scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the first quarter as the Golden Hawks sprinted to an 18-5 lead. By halftime, they had extended that lead to 30-11 on their way to the win. Courtney Brown added 11 points for the Golden Hawks while the Redskins were led by the six-point effort of McKenna Mullin.

COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 69, HARRY S TRUMAN 23
Senior Alyssa Dumont scored a game-high 15 points while teammate Emily Grundman added 10 to lead the Indians. On a night that saw 11 Rock North players get into the scoring column, the big story just might have been the contributions of the team’s three freshman – Megan Hannagen (8 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist), Jessica Gerber (7 points, 4 rebounds, 5 steals, 6 assists) and Krista Campbell (7 points, 6 rebounds, two steals, 3 assists). Dumont also had two rebounds, three steals, one block and three assists for the Indians, who led 35-9 at the intermission and never looked back.
The Tigers were led by the eight-point effort of Khristafah Jackson.

WILLIAM TENNENT 50, BENSALMEN 34
The Panthers picked up an important win on Tuesday when they notched their first SOL win and handed the Owls their first league loss. Emily O’Donnell – fresh off an MVP performance in the Quakertown Holiday Tournament – had another big outing, scoring a game-high 20 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Teammate Allison Chatburn added 11 points.
The Owls were led by Ashida Cooper (14 points) and Tyra Roberts (10 points).
Tennent led 15-10 at the end of one quarter and stretched that lead to double digits by halftime (25-15).

Continental Conference

NORTH PENN 53, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 44 (OT)
Foul shots were the difference in Tuesday’s Continental Conference showdown. The Maidens made theirs down the stretch. The Bucks – who led 34-26 heading into the final quarter – didn’t.
While the Maidens buried 6-of-8 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter, the Bucks connected on just 2-of-7. It is what allowed the Maidens to erase a six-point deficit with 1:22 remaining – that and a well-timed trey by sophomore Vicky Tumasz.
“In past games, we weren’t making foul shots, and it was getting bad,” said senior Steph Knauer, who was a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. “Before the game started, coach said, ‘You guys didn’t do very good with foul shots last week.’
“We all practiced and made sure we had them down before the game, and we made them when it counted.”
It looked for all the world as though the Bucks – despite misfiring on the front end of back-to-back one-and-one’s – would earn the big win after Jen Fabian sank a pair from the charity stripe with 1:22 remaining to give the Bucks a 42-36 lead.
Emily Hagan sank one-of-two for the Maidens, and after the Bucks misfired on a pair, Tumasz hit nothing but net on a three-pointer, and suddenly, it was a two-point game. After a costly West turnover, Knauer buried a pair from the line to knot the score 42-42, setting the stage for overtime.
Point guard Brenda McDermott scored off the opening tap, and the Maidens were off and running.
“We always look to do that because it starts us off good and gives us a boost,” said Lauen Crisler, who won the tap.
“Whichever team scores first has that offensive advantage,” McDermott said.
A three-point play by McDermott on her team’s next possession spotted the Maidens a quick 47-42, and when Erin Maher sank a pair from the foul line, North Penn led by seven, and a win was all but in the books.
“They subbed a lot of girls in, so we were tired, but when it came down to it, we had a lot of heart, which shows a lot about a team,” McDermott said.
While coach Terry Rakowsky rotated 11 players in and out of his lineup, only six players saw action for the Maidens, who found themselves staring at an early 11-4 lead and still trailed 16-10 at the end of one quarter. Caitlyn Mautz led the Bucks with five first-quarter points, including a trey.
“They were pressuring the guards especially,” McDermott said. “A lot of teams have been doubling Lauren (Crisler) and Steph (Knauer), and we need to work on hitting the open person.

“We hit the open person – we just need to knock down the shot. We have been in kind of a slump with our shooting. We’re definitely working on that.”
Sparked by six points from Crisler, the Maidens outscored the Bucks 11-5 in the second quarter to knot the score 21-21 at halftime.
“What ended up happening was they were double teaming, so other people were wide open at the beginning, and we were taking advantage of it,” Maiden coach Maggie deMarteleire said. “We just went through a couple of spells where we were a little careless with our passing.”
The Bucks opened up a 34-26 lead after a bucket by Amanda Parker in the closing seconds of the third quarter.
They still led 40-33 after freshman Nicole Munger scored on a basket in close, but the Maidens refused to go away, battling back to knot the score in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd.

“We were telling everyone - please come out to our game. It’s going to be such an exciting game because we knew West was a good team this year,” McDermott said.
“It was definitely hard to hear each other on the court,” Crisler added. “We had to scream really loud for every play. I thought it brought out our team chemistry because we all communicated well.”
Crisler led all scorers with 14 points while McDermott and Knauer – who reached the 1,000-point milestone in the fourth quarter - each added 10. Munger and Fabian led the Bucks with 10 points each while Mautz added nine.
“We feel like we can play with anybody, and we had a chance to beat these guys,” Rakowsky said. “We have a lot of room for improvement.
“I tell these guys – it never comes down to one foul shot or anything like that. There was a lot of stuff we left out on the court that added up to points – not getting defensive rebounds, a couple of turnovers. It never really comes down to foul shots.”

Carley Kendall had a huge game on Tuesday, scoring a game-high 16 points while also pulling down 14 rebounds and blocking three shots. Teammates Bianca Picard and Allison Gallagher each added nine points for the Indians, who put 10 players in the scoring column in the win.
Souderton led 16-10 at the end of one quarter and took a 27-18 lead into halftime. Any thoughts of a Hatter comeback were put to rest in a third quarter that saw the Indians outscore the Hatters 14-4 to go on top 41-22.
Carly Bixler led the Hatters with 12 points.

Ciara ‘CC’ Andrews led all scorers with 18 points while Christina Coleman turned in another big effort for the Lady Panthers, contributing 16 points and 13 rebounds. Ming Seawright had a big night under the backboards, pulling down 15 rebounds to go along with 11 points.
