NORTH PENN 15, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 13
Bri O’Donnell and her Knight teammates had a little score to settle when they faced the Titans in Wednesday’s conference opener. None of them had forgotten last year’s 14-13 loss that saw the Titans’ Kristen Berntsen score the game winner with two seconds remaining.
Throw in the fact that some of the same players did battle in field hockey last fall, a season came to a heartbreaking end for the 11th-seeded Knights in a 1-0 loss to the 15th-seeded Titans in a District One 3A playback game.
“I was part of the hockey season, so I knew the bitter taste that left in the players’ mouths,” said North Penn coach Heather Mellow, who is an assistant in field hockey. “There were just so many things – we were like, ‘No, we can’t let this happen again. We can’t let it happen again. We have to step up tonight.’”
And no one stepped up more than O’Donnell – a three-time all-state field hockey player who will continue her career at Penn State. The senior standout – under the weather when the two teams met last fall in field hockey - torched the Titans’ defense for eight goals, including a goal in the closing seconds to put an exclamation point on the emotional win. She also had five draw controls.
“She was ridiculous today,” Mellow said. “I think she was like, ‘No, we’re not losing this game. I’m not letting that happen.’
“That’s Bri right there – she knew she did not have her best game when they played in districts. She had a crazy fever and went to the hospital the next day. She made up for it today, for sure.”
Kelly Macnamara also had a big game for the Knights with four goals and one assist. Kristin Varilla collected a hat trick, and Grace Sacchetti added two assists and two draw controls. Casey Cavanaugh had four draw controls, and Heather Shannon contributed one assist and three draw controls.
Knights goalie Ashley Lambert recorded eight saves in a winning effort.
Mellow, whose team trailed by one at the intermission, credited the defensive effort of Shannon Haedrich on Kasey Dietzel, who will continue her career at the U.S. Naval Academy.
“Shannon did a great job on Kasey,” the Knights’ coach said. “They kept trying to set picks for her, and Shannon stayed with her the entire time.”
Anna Green was a one-woman wrecking crew for the Titans, scoring seven first-half goals and propelling her team to a 9-8 lead at the intermission. The Knights rallied to knot the score 9-9 and went on to open up a 14-11 lead only to watch the Titans – who were down a player – trim that lead to one. The Knights, however, would not be denied.
“This was definitely the boost we needed,” Mellow said. “Bri (O’Donnell) shows up for these big games. In yesterday’s game (a 19-1 win over Cheltenham), she could have easily scored (a lot) of goals, but she’s such an unselfish player. She steps up when the team needs it. It’s awesome.
“Kelly Macnamara did a nice job too.”
