National Conference
Council Rock North 15, Abington 7
Last year, the Indians shared the National Conference crown with the Ghosts. Early indications suggest they won’t be satisfied with a co-championship this time around.
If there were any doubts, the Indians – who have scored 50 goals in their last three games combined – have clearly established themselves as the team to beat in conference play.
“They are beginning to play well,” co-coach Pat Toner said. “Coming into the season, you think of all these different scenarios, and if you coach long enough, you have seen just about everything.
“The thing that is most surprising to me is we lost two of our top players (Molly Doyle and Hannah Plappert), and everybody else was able to step up.”
Offensively, Kara Magley has been all but unstoppable, and in Monday’s win, she torched the Ghosts for seven goals and two assists. Lindsay Rheiner added four goals while Becky Ely contributed a pair. Erica Green and Kara Le (one assist) each scored single goals, and Jackie Strange contributed three assists.
“It’s no surprise who the stronger attackers we have are, but it doesn’t make any difference because they’ve been double teamed and sometimes triple teamed, and they are unselfish players who can find somebody else,” Toner said of Magley and Rheiner. “We’re just trying to play within our game, we’re trying to control the situation and control the game and utilize the people we have in the best way.
“We’re fortunate that we’ll be getting Hannah (Plappert) back shortly.”
Abington was led by its big guns – Temple-bound Carli Fitzgerald (three goals, two assists) and Molly Seefried (three goals, one assist). Meredith Cox added a single goal for the Ghosts, who trailed 8-2 at the intermission.
“It was a total team effort,” Toner said. “Our defense played very well.
“I have a lot of respect for Abington. Their players are very strong – they always are. They have beautiful stickwork, and we knew we had to control things in order to have a chance to beat them. We controlled the groundballs and controlled some of the draws, but it was like a chess match. Abington made some adjustments, and we made some adjustments.
“Abington came out strong in the second half, which we expected to happen. We wanted to keep control as much as we could.”
While the Ghosts fell to 2-1 in league play, the Indians upped their record to 4-0.
