Continental Conference.
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 14, PENNRIDGE 13
It had been close to two years since the Patriots last won a conference game – May 3, 2011 to be exact, but they brought their conference losing streak to a dramatic end on Thursday night, thanks to their thrilling come-from-behind win. Senior Mary Kate Schwartz played a starring role for the Patriots, scoring nine goals and assisting on the game winner.
“You don’t understand – it’s almost like a proud parent,” coach Dipi Bhaya said. “You’ve been trying to work this out and teach them. The hardest thing for me – they kept saying, ‘Coach, we never had this before. We never had this before.’
“When they would lose a game, they would cheer like they did great, and I was like, ‘Wait, you didn’t win. What are you doing?’ They just didn’t know.
“They took the loss to West (on Tuesday) really hard. They were scared, and they didn’t play with the confidence they did against Hatboro with the all-out aggressiveness. Today’s game brought out the fight.”
The win came on the heels of the jayvee’s first win.
“I told the jayvee, ‘I am so proud of you. This is my first conference win at East,’ and the varsity was sitting right behind me and heard it,” Bhaya said. “They told me after the game, ‘We saw how proud you were of them, and we wanted that too.’ They got fired up because the jayvee won.”
Making the win ever sweeter was the fact that the Patriots needed some late-game heroics to pull it out. They actually trailed 13-12 with two minutes to go, but a goal by Schwartz at the 1:46 mark knotted the score. Alex Law (Schwartz assist) scored the game winner with 31 seconds remaining.
“The attitude was ‘Oh my god, we’re losing,’ but it was almost as if they didn’t care – they had a purpose, and that is what I’ve been waiting for as a coach,” Bhaya said. “I want them to remember that feeling.
“Pennridge has some really nice players, so it was a nice reward for them.”
Emma Rosenthal and Alana Rivas split time in goal for the Patriots with both collecting five saves.
“Alana Rivas made a key save, and then she cleared it over 50 yards to Mary Kate, who made one pass to Alex for the (game-winning) goal,” Bhaya said. “It was just two passes. It was a nice job.
“The goalie came out, and Alex had to dodge her. She’s a young player and played defense for East last year. I moved her to first home this year, and this was a good confidence builder for her.”
Law finished the game with two goals. Senior Katt Miller had one goal and four assists, and Marissa Glatt had one goal and one assist. Kaitlin Stout added a goal to close out the scoring.”
Senior Taylor Dachowski led the Rams with five goals, and Jess Csaszar added two goals and two assists. Sam Ryder had a pair of goals, and Leah Alcott had a goal and an assist. Devan Rimmer and Allison Fugate both had single goals. Goalie Danielle Nichols was credited with seven saves.
While the Rams fell to 0-3 in the league (0-4 overall), the Patriots are 1-3 in league play (2-3 overall)
“We were just so happy, and the girls were so happy,” Bhaya said. “It was just a really nice moment.
“Somebody said, ‘The curse is broken.’ It was almost like watching someone being born. It was incredible. I was happy for them.”
HATBORO-HORSHAM 11, SOUDERTON 7
The Hatters sprinted to a 7-1 lead and took a 10-5 lead into halftime, but the scoring slowed down considerably in a second half that saw the Indians – behind the glittering 11-save effort of goalie Jen Bergey – outscore the Hatters 2-1. Bergey finished the game with 18 saves.
Sophomore Casey Swezey led a balanced Hatter attack with three goals while Rachel Rausa and Katie McKay each had a pair of goals. Maria Guerra had one goal and two assists, and Jenna Cutilli, Anette Desipio and Colby Eldridge each had one goal.

American Conference
WISSAHICKON 11, CHELTENHAM 7
The Trojans sprinted to an 8-2 halftime lead and then fought off a second half charge by the Lady Panthers.
“We jumped out to an 8-2 halftime lead and played very well,” Wissahickon coach David Schlesinger said. “Cheltenham kept the pressure on. They were running a particular play for (Gabby) Szczepanek, and she started to have success with that. It took a while for us to adjust.
“I’m glad it was a tough game because we have Upper Dublin on Monday, and we needed to be tested a little bit. What I tell our girls is that every day I want them to get a little bit better. We’re shooting for the end of the year. That’s the test of whether we have a successful season or not.”
Starring for the Trojans, according to Schlesinger, were Lindsay Anderson with three goals and one assist and goalie Julie Silverman, who turned away 12 shots.
“She played exceptionally well, especially in the second half when Cheltenham was trying to mount their comeback,” the Trojans’ first-year coach said of his goalie. Laura Frankenfield also had three goals and one assist. Lauren Irvine had two goals and one assist. Zoe Gomez, Taylor Myers and Rachel Zucker each added one goal. Bailey Weber had an assist.
Defensively, Jackie Hibbs had six ground balls. She also had three draw controls.
“She’s very, very strong,” Schlesinger said. “Her field hockey skills translate well onto the lacrosse field. She’s just a vacuum cleaner with ground balls, and she’s a very smart athlete.”
Szczepanek led the Lady Panthers with four goals.
The Trojans improve to 2-0 in league play (3-0 overall) while the Lady Panthers are 1-2 in the league.
UPPER MERION 12, PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 11
Trailing for the better part of the game, the Vikings rallied for the dramatic win. Making things even more interesting was the fact that the Vikings were down a player during the crucial final minutes of the game after a player received her second yellow card of the game.
“The team maintained their composure,” coach Angie Yanocha said.
Gambone scored three goals and one assist to lead the Vikings. Her second goal of the game, according to Yanocha, came after coming up with an interception just over the restraining line that she took in for the score. Jackie Schauble added a pair of goals, and Liz Botto had one goal and one assist.

Each accounted for two of the forced turnovers. McAteer, Botto and Reinert led the team in ground ball control, and Botto also dominated in draw control.
