Hatboro-Horsham 19, Souderton 13
Senior Sarah Tustin scored six goals and contributed an assist to lead the Hatters to the important win.
“Sarah has been stepping it up,” coach Marie Schmucker said of the Vanderbilt-bound senior.
Nicole Beck added four goals and one assist while Lauren Purvis and Courtnee Daley both contributed the hat trick. Purvis had a pair of assists, and Day had one assist. Lizzy Carr scored a pair of goals, and Caroline Hagan had a single goal to close out the scoring.
The Hatters opened up a 13-6 halftime lead and never looked back.
“It started to get close, and at one point, we were only up by three or four goals,” Schmucker said. “The bottom line was my girls knew how much this game meant.”
The win solidified the Hatters’ hold on second place behind North Penn in the Continental Conference standings. They are 7-2 in league play with one game remaining.
The Indians, who fell to 4-5 in the league, were coming off a heartbreaking 11-10 overtime loss to North Penn 24 hours earlier.
“Souderton is a great team, but just hearing what happened last night – that’s tough,” Schmucker said. “Not only did they play a full game. They went into sudden death overtime.
“ I told my girls – ‘They went into overtime last night. We have to jump on them early and stay ahead.’ We played hard, we made smart choices, and our shot selection was great. It could have gone either way. Souderton had opportunities. We started capitalizing on draw control, and it changed the tempo of the game.”
In the first half, Schmucker called for a stick check, and the Souderton player’s stick was ruled illegal – yet another factor that swung momentum in the Hatters’ favor.
“The weather also was a factor,” Schmucker said. “It was pouring, but it was pouring for both teams. I just think we played really well.”
For the Indians, Kirstin Russell scored four goals while Lindsay Walbrandt had three goals and three assists. Danielle Notvest and Jenna Hayes both had two goals. Carly Kendall (two assists) and Melinda Wojt each added one goal. Gabby McAndrews had an assist.
Council Rock North 19, Pennsbury 4
Sophomore Kara Magley scored a career-high seven goals while sophomore Hannah Plappert added six goals and two assists as the Indians moved one step closer to clinching a share of the National Conference crown.
Lindsay Rheiner added two goals and four assists while Molly Doyle had four goals and three assists. Elly Plapper contributed three assists and Kara Le had one assist.
The Indians, who improved to 8-1 in league play, will host Central Bucks East in their regular season finale on Thursday. Their only loss of the season was a one-goal loss to three-time defending conference champion Abington.
“To be in the position where we could be one goal away from a perfect (regular) season was the furthest thing from my mind coming into the year,” coach Pat Toner said. “We still have to play a strong East team, so I’m not assuming we won the league in any way shape of form, but that’s what we’d like to do.”
Abington 15, Neshaminy 2
The Ghosts need just one more win to clinch at least a share of their fourth consecutive SOL National Conference crown after Tuesday’s big win. Closing out the scoring were Liz Wilson (one goal, one assist, four ground balls), Cait Enderle (one goal, four draw controls), Courtney Enderle (one goal), Carrie Margolis (one goal) and Hanna Sjoholm (one goal).
