SPRINGFIELD (DELCO) 12, UPPER DUBLIN 10
The Flying Cardinals proved they could play with the district’s elite when they took on the Cougars in a marquee non-league contest on Friday, rallying from a 12-6 deficit to make it a 12-10 game with 42.4 seconds remaining after a free position goal by Emily Hitchings.
It was a far cry from last year’s meeting that saw the Cougars earn a 19-7 win in the season finale for both squads.
“Last year we lost to Springfield by 12, and this year it was 3-3 at halftime,” coach Dee Cross said. “Unfortunately, we have not had to play two full halves a lot in our games.
“It was the same thing against Conestoga (on Monday in a 14-9 loss). We played a great first half and came out and had a lull the first 10 minutes of the second half, and you just can’t do that against good teams.”
For a Flying Cardinal squad that coasted through conference play this season, Friday’s end-of-the-year showdown against Springfield (Delco) was the perfect preparation for districts.
“Actually, I tried to do our schedule from last year – we played Conestoga on a Monday and Springfield-Delco on a Friday,” coach Cross said. “We’re limited because we have 12 league games and we can only go out-of-league six times. I wanted to get specifically two Central League teams that I know will be very good for us, and I’m glad we did.”
The Cougars opened the second half with a 9-3 tear that culminated with a goal by Maddy Lynch at the 4:42 mark.
The fun began for the Flying Cardinals when Kelly Cross found Emily Hitchings for a goal with 2:23 remaining in regulation, and then it was the Cross sisters teaming up for a goal with Kelly finding Julie for the score. Nineteen seconds later, Kelly Cross found Brooke Callahan for the score, prompting the Cougars to call a quick timeout.
“Any time a team calls a timeout, it means you’re doing something right,” coach Cross said.
The Flying Cardinals came out of the timeout and trimmed the Cougars’ lead to two after a free position goal by Hitchings, but that’s as close as they would get.
“In the Central League, it’s a dog fight every time they go against each other,” coach Cross said. “That’s why we need a game like today and a game like Conestoga to at least show the girls the level we can play at and the level we need to play at if we want to do anything in the postseason.
“We had less turnovers today than we did Monday. There were still some uncharacteristic turnovers, but again, I think it’s because we’re not in pressure situations a lot.”
Cross, Hitchings and Callahan each finished with three goals. Cross also had three assists and Hitchings, one assist. Julie Cross added a single goal.
“It’s a lot of fun because we know these are the games that challenge us and make us a better team,” Hitchings said. “It’s just what we need before playoffs so we know what we’ll be up against.”
“We go into every game as a challenge, but games like this and the adrenalin you feel all day – it’s so much fun,” Callahan added.
The Flying Cardinals closed out the regular season with a 15-3 record.
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 11, ABINGTON 8
Mary Kate Schwartz scored four goals and contributed an assist while teammates Sam Axenroth and Marissa Glatt each scored a pair to lead the Patriots to the big win in their season finale. Kelly Lapp (one assist), Ali Moore and Julia Norek each added one goal.
Axenroth scored the first goal of the game for East, and it also was the 100th goal of her career.
Meredith Cox led the Ghosts with five goals.
The Patriots closed out their season with a 3-13 record while Abington fell to 5-12.
UPPER MORELAND 14, NEW HOPE-SOLEBURY 11
The Golden Bears found themselves on the short end of a 6-5 score at halftime but outscored the Lions 9-5 in the second half to earn the big non-league win on Friday.
Ashley Duff led the Golden Bears with four goals and one assist while Lily Sgro added three goals and Veronica Baez and Maddie Mauro, two goals each. Samara Santry (one assist), Bridget Meade and Sarah Reice each had one goal. Sophomore Kaitlin Taylor (10 saves) and senior Emma Joyce (one save) combined to earn the win in goal for the Golden Bears, who closed out their season with a 4-14 record.
