SOL Girls' Lax Wrap (4-6-11)

Central Bucks South 20, Central Bucks East 11

There’s apparently something special about the number 12 for Maddie DiBrino.
The South junior – a second team all-league defender last season – not only wears the number 12 on her uniform, she matched that number by scoring a school record 12 goals in the Titans’ big win over their neighboring rival.
“What’s funny is she’s our top defender,” coach Janique Craig said. “She’s a defensive midfield player, but she can play everything, and she can score.”
Can she ever.
DiBrino not only scored 12 goals, she also had a hand in two others as she finished with 12 goals and two assists for a total of 14 points.
Kelly Hamilton added four goals and three assists while Brynn Dietzal had two goals and two assists. Casey Haegele had one goal and three assists, and Taylor Michener had one goal and two assists. Kayla Kenney had three assists for the Titans.
“East is a very talented team,” Craig said. “They challenged us, and they had a great run at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half.
“When they got the draw control, they had fast breaks, and we had to slow them down. They’re a great team.”
The Patriots were led by the six-goal, one-assist effort of Jamie Burns. Sam Axenroth and Carolyn Remmey both added two goals. Remmey also had three assists. Marissa Glatt added one goal and one assist.
The Titans played the final 16 minutes of the game down a player after picking up their third yellow card.
“I called a timeout, and I told the girls they all needed to step up because we were without our top attacker, and East was doing a great job on the draw,” Craig said. “Maddie DiBrino scored 12 goals, Casey Haegele controlled the midfield, Kayla Kenney with draw control and coming up with possession and down low Brynn Dietzal – all the girls stepped it up big time.
“It was really great to see that. I know what some of them have in them, but East gave us a scare for a little bit.”
While the Patriots (0-3) remain winless in league play, the Titans are 1-2 in the league but 3-2 overall.
“We definitely still have things to work on,” Craig said. “We’re taking it one game at a time.
“We’re celebrating the win, but we still need to get better. We still have a younger team, which is exciting.”
Hatboro-Horsham 15, Abington 7
Cortnee Daly and Nicole Beck each scored four goals to lead the Hatters to the win over the Ghosts. Daly also had a pair of assists and Beck had one assist. Lizzy Carr (one assist) and Julie McKay both had a pair of goals. Caroline Hagan, Rachel Rauza and Lauren Mendelsohn each added single goals.
“I think this win was big for us because Abington is still Abington,” coach Duncan Swezey said. “I thought the game was going to be closer, but one of their best players (Molly Seefried) is out with a concussion.
“To be successful - I don’t care who you are - if you take your best player off the field and replace her with your 12th player on the field, that’s not even fair. In this league, you have to have six or seven players that can legitimately play. That would devastate us if we had to take one of our top four or five players off the field and go with our 12th or 13th player. The momentum that takes from you – I know how he feels.”
The Ghosts were led by Carli Fitzgerald and Meredith Cox with two goals each while Hannah Sjoholm, Elisa McCall and Allison Rooney each scored one goal.
“Ours was more of a possession game,” said Swezey, whose team led 10-2 at the intermission. “The first eight or nine minutes of the game we were just attacking them and attacking them.
“Their goalie (Emily Towey) – I think she stopped the first six shots on us. She was just stoning some of our girls. I was very impressed with their goalie play.”
Towey turned away 12 shots while Hatboro’s Jackie Giovinazzo stopped four shots.
“I think the defense did a great job,” Swezey said. “Jane Henry – a freshman – really had a good game. She’s just a solid player.
“Our goalie made some nice saves.”
As a result of the win, the stage has been set for an early-season SOL showdown.
The Hatters will travel to North Penn on Friday for a battle of the Continental Conference’s lone undefeated squads. Both teams have identical 3-0 records in the league. North Penn is 6-0 overall while the Hatters are 5-0.
“We watched them today,” said Swezey, whose team watched the Maidens defeat Souderton 17-3. “North Penn plays a very tight collapsing defense. If you don’t get by them on a fast break, you’re not going in easy. As soon as you get to the eight, they’re doubling you.
“At the end of the day, you’re not going to beat them on an iso, you’re going to have to beat them as a team.”
North Penn 16, Souderton 3
Senior Garrie Grenfell scored six goals, and sophomore goalie Jenna Stover – who finished with a career-high 14 saves – had some big stops early as the Maidens opened up a 7-2 halftime lead on their way to the decisive win.
“I think we did a nice job of keeping our composure,” coach Jami Wilus said. “We knew it was going to be an intense game, and we knew Souderton was going to come out ready to play, so we wanted to start off strong and continue for the entire game.
“Jenna Stover, our goalie, had an amazing game today. She was seeing the ball well, but I think as a whole, our defense was able to give her shots she could handle by forcing Souderton to take off-angle shots. Jenna was in good position, but a lot of it was due to our defense and the way they were playing the ball.”
Emilie Ikeda sparked the Maidens’ defense with three draw controls, three groundballs and three caused turnovers.
In addition to Grenfell, Rachel Shaw and Macie Hauck contributed the hat trick for the Maidens. Shaw also had two assists and two draw controls. Brenda McDermott scored a pair of goals to go along with three draw controls while Kait Suzuki and Maddy Humphrey each added single goals.
“We had such an uncharacteristic game on Monday,” Wilus said of her team’s 10-8 win over Central Bucks South in a game the Maidens trailed 6-3 early. “I feel as though we almost needed that to jump start us and to help us figure out that everyone needs to contribute, and we need to be ready for the ball offensively as well as defensively at all times.
“Garrie was in the right position tonight. We ran a motion offense. We were just trying to move the ball as much as we could and get everyone involved.”
For Wilus and her players, Friday’s showdown against Hatboro is just another game on the schedule. Every game, according to the Maidens’ coach, is equally important.
“I told the girls before the game started today – this is just another big game for us,” the Maidens’ coach said. “We prepared for Souderton the way we would prepare for any other game.
“I think our girls buy into that. We don’t do anything different for any opponent. I think that consistency in that preparation is really starting to help them understand that every game is important.”
Souderton received single goals from Chessie Rahmer, Melinda Wojt and Danielle Notvest. Goalkeeper Jen Bergey turned away eight shots.
Central Bucks West 12, Pennridge 11
Jane Savard scored four goals and while Tara Shugars, Steph Cooper and Elena Romesburg each added a pair of goals for the Bucks. Shugars also had four groundballs and three draw controls while Romesburg had five groundballs and three draw controls. Erica Schweibenz and Jess Circuit each added single goals while Amanda Parker contributed an assist.
“It was a very exciting game,” West coach Tara Schmucker said. “Pennridge’s speed was difficult to slow down, and Colyar and Beck broke apart my defense.
“Jane Savard and Steph Cooper helped contribute and bring some speed to our offensive game, but in the end, the play of Tara Shugars and Elena Romesburg in the midfield as well as defensive standouts like Christy Grezeszak and goalie Sammie Hogan helped us stay on top in this back and forth game.”
Grezeszak was credited with six groundballs while Hogan had 10 saves – five crucial saves in the second half.
“Pennridge had an opportunity with about 20 seconds left in the game, but Elena Romseburg had a huge interception that clinched the win,” Schmucker said.
Pennridge was led by the five-goal effort of Julia Colyar while Nikki Beck added three goals. Sarah Wiley had a pair of goals, and Taylor Dachowski had one goal. In goal, Danielle Nichols turned away seven shots for the Rams.
Wissahickon 16, Upper Moreland 1
Zoe Gomez scored six goals while teammate Laura Frankenfield had four goals and two assists to lead the Trojans. Jackie Hibbs and Taylor Myers each scored a pair of goals while Maddie Sharp (one assist) and Emily Croke each scored single goals.
Kathryn Brunner scored Upper Moreland’s lone goal.
Trojan goalie Jessica Scannapieco turned away five shots while the duo of Emma Joyce and Bridget Meade turned away seven shots for the Golden Gears.
The Trojans upped their record to 3-0 in league play (3-2 overall) while the Golden Bears fell to 0-3 in the league (0-4 overall).
Upper Dublin 14, Norristown 0
Brooke Callahan and Kelly Cross each contributed six goals and two assists. Emily Hitchings, Rachel DiFrangia (one assist) and Taylor D’Ginto each scored two goals. Megan Rock and Kaley Weinstein both scored single goals for the Flying Cardinals, who led 12-0 at the intermission.
Anna Lauer turned away two shots in the shutout while Norristown’s Amie Adanie had three saves.
