CR South & Pennsbury were winners in Thursday’s second round of the District 1 4A Tournament. New Hope-Solebury captured the District 1 2A title.
CLASS 4A
#1-2 COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 3, #1-15 METHACTON 1
Edan Kauer had a big day for the Golden Hawks, leading them to the win in Thursday’s second round with 11 kills, eight digs, one ace and two blocks.
Yana Kotlyarenko added six kills while Olivia De Saro had five kills, two blocks and five digs. Setters Ashlyn Dinan (15 assists, 14 digs, 2 kills) and Rachel Khelmer (12 assists, 1 kill, 4 aces) combined for 27 assists. Cassidy Melnick led the defense with 13 digs, and Cadence Palmer added 11 digs and one ace. Also contributing for the Golden Hawks were Rachel Buchnik (4 kills, 1 block), Nala Kauer (4 kills, 1 ace), Kristina Shumakov (3 kills) and Halle Wilson (1 ace).
Council Rock South (17-2, 12-0 SOL) will host #7 Bishop Shanahan in a quarterfinal match on Saturday at 11 a.m.
#5 PENNSBURY 3, #12 STRATH HAVEN 1
The Falcons received big performances up and down their lineup in Thursday’s second round win over Strath Haven.
“Strath Haven was a well-coached team,” Pennsbury coach Bob Burns said. “After scouting them, I thought we would be better prepared against them, but they kept mixing up their attacks and did a great job keeping us off-balance.
“As soon as we adjusted to one hitter, they would throw us something unexpected. I credit our girls for constantly adapting and playing relentlessly.”
Freshman outside Madara Bungs was impressive, contributing 14 kills and 12 digs. Junior opposite Annika Foundos had 10 kills, and junior outside Brigitte Burns had 11 kills. Senior middle hitters Jocelyn Fang (7 kills) and Claire MacElroy (11 kills) combined for 18 kills. Senior setter Faith Szumigala had 49 assists, and senior libero Jadyn Rogan had 17 digs.
Pennsbury (16-3, 9-3 SOL) will host #13 Spring-Ford on Saturday at noon in a district quarterfinal match.
#8 WEST CHESTER EAST 8, #9 CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 1
The visiting Bucks saw their successful season come to an end in Thursday’s second round.
Alexis Barklage (14 kills, 2 blocks, 3 digs) and Rachel Hu (12 kills, 1 ace, 11 digs, 1 assist) turned in big performances in their final outing of the year. Erin Ferello (13 assists, 11 digs, 3 kills) and Elisa Kremser (18 assists, 5 digs) combined for 31 assists as they shared setting duties. Alexa Lee had a monster defensive effort, finishing with 25 digs to go along with one ace and two assists. Mairead Donaher added 11 digs and Amber Woodring had nine. Also contributing were Hollis Walton (5 kills, 3 aces, 3 blocks, 2 digs), Kya Lynch (4 kills) and Lily Rasnake (1 ace, 3 digs).
Central Bucks West closed out its season with an 11-1 SOL record and a share of the Colonial Division title. The Bucks were 15-4 overall.
