Check out Monday’s SOL volleyball results.
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 3, NESHAMINY 1 (25-20, 25-19, 19-25, 25-18)
The Patriots used Monday’s non-league match as a warm-up to Tuesday’s ‘Dig Pink’ showdown against archrival Central Bucks West.
“We tried to do a lot of new things today,” East coach Scott Geller said. “The one big thing for us is just looking at our remaining schedule, we truly don’t have many practices left, so we’re using a lot of matches moving forward to work on cleaning things up.”
Courtney Kauffman (14 kills), Hannah Lunak (12 kills) and Lindsay Mcintosh (nine kills) led the Patriots at the net. Rachel Clow (six kills, 10 digs) and Caroline Davis (six aces, 42 assists) had solid all-around games. Erin Lane led the defense with 13 digs while teammate Laura Kennedy had 12. Victoria Spadafora added four kills.
On the other side of the court, Kate Livingstone was delighted to see her team take on a Patriot squad that has been a force in the Continental Conference.
“It’s fun to see a good team without the pressure of the league thing going on,” the Redskins’ coach said. “My kids get scared when they play big teams sometimes, and in this match, they played well. They could play better, but we figured it out a little bit.
“It was just a fun match. I think we’re just finding out who we are. My freshman middle, Mackenzie Maher, stepped up. She’s just learning the game, but it’s nice to see her get better every time she plays. My four seniors have really stepped up. Julia Staub had 25 assists, and I thought she played well. It’s fun to see (Jen) Harasim and (Morgan) Oberholtzer really hit. They’re fun to watch.”
Harasim had a big match for the Redskins, delivering 16 kills, 14 digs and two aces while Oberholtzer had seven kills, 10 digs and five aces. Molly MacDonald had 10 digs and four kills. Kirsten Borsos had five aces, and Danielle Catapano had nine digs and four kills.
In the first set, the Patriots turned a 3-2 deficit into a 7-3 lead. Kauffman delivered a kill to start the run and then served for four straight points. The Redskins kept it close, trailing by just two (21-19) after a Harasim kill. A Kauffman run sparked a 4-1 Patriot run. Lunak delivered a first contact kill and then Kauffman closed it out with a kill for set point.
In the second set, the Patriots opened up a 12-5 lead after a Clow kill only to watch the Redskins knot the score on an Oberholtzer ace. An East net violation gave the Redskins a 13-12 lead, but the Patriots took a lead they would not lose on a block at the net. Kauffman once again delivered set point, this time on a service ace.
The two teams were deadlocked 12-12 in the third set, but a net serve by East gave the Redskins a lead they would not lose. Harasim followed with a service ace, and when Spadafora delivered a back row kill, the Redskins led 15-12. East pulled to within one after a Mcintosh service ace (18-17) and knotted the score on a Redskin passing miscue, but Neshaminy’s MacDonald delivered a kill. Harasim followed with a winner, and Borsos came up with a service ace, putting the Redskins on top 21-18. They went on to earn the 25-19 win.
The Redskins opened up a 5-0 lead in the third set after a tape ace by Oberholtzer, but East rallied to go on top 10-9 after a Kauffman kill, and the Patriots never looked back.
“Our energy wasn’t at its highest today,” Davis said. “Some of us were at a high level, some of us weren’t. At the end, we picked up our energy, and we were able to pull it together and win the game.”
Despite the outcome, Harasim – like her coach – welcomed the opportunity to face a strong Patriot squad.
“I think it’s great,” the Redskins’ senior said. “It’s almost like a reflection of ourselves. We have some of the same strengths as them. We can dig up their hits, and they can dig up our hits. We can make great kills, and they can make great kills.
“After playing these type of teams, we settle into a rhythm and can unleash our power to the rest of the teams in the second half.”
