COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 3, NESHAMINY 0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-18)
The Golden Hawks have upped their level of play recently, and while some of it is simply the result of experience and hard work, there are other factors in play as well.
“It think it’s mostly experience, but a lot of it is because we’re a very close-knit team,” senior co-captain Lexie Kremp said. “We are one unit.
“When one person is having an off day, everybody is there to pick them up. Nobody is playing for themselves this year. In previous years, we did struggle a little bit with selfishness whereas this year we’re a family. It’s amazing.”
This is the closest we have ever been as a team,” senior co-captain Katie Quinn added. “It’s so great to see that.”
Quinn and teammate Kelly Nicholas led the Golden Hawks at the net with each delivering eight kills. Both players also had three aces. Middle blocker Donna Spiteri added five aces and three blocks.
Although the sweep might suggest otherwise, the Golden Hawks found themselves in a battle with a spirited Redskin squad.
“I know when we played them the last time, we took them in three easily,” Quinn said. “We knew going into this they would improve a little bit, so we expected a solid match out of them.
“We also knew they have a young team, and we’re a little more experienced. It was all about who made less mistakes.”
On Thursday, it was the experienced Golden Hawks who made fewer mistakes, but Neshaminy coach Kate Livingstone was pleased with her team’s performance.
“Everyone in our league is very tough this year, and CR South is no exception,” she said. “We played tough tonight. We had our usual strong defense, and we had a few great hits, but missing serves just killed us.”
Kassie Ockford led the ‘Skins with eight digs, seven kills and two aces. Mackenzie Maher had five blocks and four kills. Danielle Catapano added 21 assists. Miranda Foster, Jill Willis and Jasmine Oliver each had three kills.
In the opening set, the Hawks led 15-12 after a Spiteri service ace and upped that lead to 20-15 after back-to-back Quinn aces. They went on to win 25-20.
In the second set, the Golden Hawks opened up a 17-10 lead only to watch the Redskins battle back to make it a 17-13 game. The Hawks stretched the lead to 22-15 after a Redskin hit sailed out of play, but out of a Redskin timeout, Ockford delivered a kill that sparked a 3-0 run to make it a 22-18 game. The Redskins would get no closer.
“I was pleased,” Rock South coach Kelly Korn said. “They (the Redskins) were scrappy, and they didn’t give up.
“We have learned to shut down those runs. We need to stop letting teams get runs, but we have learned to at least cut them off.”
The third set followed a similar patter. The Golden Hawks led 14-7 after a Neshaminy net serve, but the Redskins battled back to make it a 17-13 game after a Gabby Mannine ace. It was a three-point game after a Rock South hit out of play, but the Redskins would get no closer.
The win moved the Golden Hawks one step closer to their ultimate goal – a trip to districts.
“Being a senior and finally having the chance of going to playoffs right in front of us is so exciting,” Quinn said.
