SOL Girls' Volleyball Wrap (9-28-16)

Check out the results for SOL girls’ volleyball teams in action Wednesday.

CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 3, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 0 (33-31, 20-25, 18-25, 25-21, 15-10)
The Titans edged the Patriots in a marathon first set but then dropped the next two before rallying for the emotional win.
“It was a battle,” coach Kurt Godfrey said. “I have never been involved in a set that has gone that high. I mean 28-26 and even 29-27, sure, but to be able to say we went to 33-31…”
The Titans’ coach didn’t finish his thought. He didn’t have to. The score speaks for itself. South actually led 18-13 at one point, but the Patriots rallied to knot the score 22-22, and the battle of wills began.
“We practice situational kind of things like this,” Godfrey said. “Never are we practicing 33-31, but we’re practicing – it’s 20-23 them and how do we get back into it? It’s 20-20 first of five, and how do we get to 25?
“We practice these things, and I don’t know if the girls really understand that they’re going to come back into a match like this, but that’s exactly why we practice them. Situational serving, we’re in serve receive and it’s 22-24 them – where do we serve? Tonight our hard work paid off.
“That being said, East wanted that set just as badly as we did. It’s a big inter-district rivalry just like it is against West.”
Senior outside hitter Megan Manderson was a force at the net and also came up big defensively, finishing with 18 kills, 34 digs and five aces.
“Megan Manderson had an incredibly huge night for us tonight,” Godfrey said. “She hit the ball 49 times tonight with 18 kills and two hitting errors.
“Their defense was all over the place.”
Senior libero Morgan McCrory led the Titans defensively with 48 digs, two kills and one assist.
“You talk about taking one for the team – her knees, her elbows, her entire body is going to be sore tomorrow because she dove all over the place tonight,” Godfrey said. “Our defense played really aggressive tonight. They stayed at home and played really, really well.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever been involved in such long rallies throughout an entire match. You may get a couple of long rallies in a game or two games, but we had long rallies all night long tonight. We started our match at quarter to seven, and we weren’t done until 9:15. It was an incredibly long match. The first set obviously shows how close of a match it was, but the rest of the scores don’t show the excitement, the intensity and just how close it really was tonight in every single game. It was a really good match that we were able to come up on the right side of.”
Setters Kelly Danyluk (18 assists, three aces, one kill, eight digs) and Erica Werener (19 assists, two aces, seven digs) both had big nights. Alyssa Dallmer added three aces, seven kills, four blocks and three digs while Caroline Choromanski had 14 digs.
“I’m incredibly proud of the way that all of our girls played,” Godfrey said. “Even girls that stepped into new roles.
“Kayla Dougherty hasn’t really started for us in the past and had the opportunity to start in the last few games, and she’s playing phenomenally for us. She had five kills, a couple of errors, but she played defense really well. She blocked really well for us tonight. She didn’t have any blocks, but she forced hitters to go around her. She has been on fire for us since we played West last Monday. She’s worked so hard in practice, and she’s earned every minute of her playing time. She’s starting and doing great.”
For the Patriots, Devon Hall had four aces, 12 kills and six digs, and setter Emily Lunny added three aces, 2.5 blocks, nine digs and 30 assists. Hannah Walentukonis had a team-high 14 kills while Jess Krzemanski had a big night with 11 kills, 15 digs and seven blocks. Jess Guillen had five kills and 2.5 blocks. Morgan Beakley lead the defense with 25 digs to go along with three aces. Morgan D’Angelo added 10 digs, and Ysabelle Minschwaner finished with six kills and 12 digs.
“They were out for us tonight,” Godfrey said. “We beat them the first time, and they wanted our number tonight. They worked really hard.
“I was really impressed by their movement on defense and the way in which their servers spread out the ball. I think East played really, really well tonight, and my hat’s off to them. We were able to dig just a little deeper and come away with the win.
“We made some errors early in the match that hurt us in games one, two and three, but I think we were able to clean them up for sets four and five.”
