SOL American Conference

ABINGTON 3, HATBORO-HORSHAM 0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-17)
The Ghosts notched a sweep of the visiting Hatters. It was Abington’s first win over the Hatters since 2017 when the Ghosts won the conference title. Hatboro-Horsham won four straight conference crowns since then.
“It’s definitely a rivalry,” Abington coach Dan Marsh said. “Both teams get after each other. Today we had our best warmup I’ve ever seen. We looked really good, and my assistant coach said, ‘Dude, they’re not scared, they’re ready.’
“We jumped out to a 7-0 lead and just went from there. It was just so much fun – it was everything I love about high school athletics. Even a girl from Hatboro came up to me after the match and said, ‘That was fun.’ It was just two teams battling, and we were fortunate to be victorious today.”
Kenya Lucas had another big game at the net, leading the Ghosts with 16 kills. Sophomore setter Mary Carter had 18 assists, and Iris Winegard led the defense with 11 digs.
“It was a great atmosphere,” Marsh said. “The mom of one our players is from Haiti, and she has non-stop energy. The football players must have got done with practice early because of the rain, and they all came in. They started this chant ‘Ah, Ah, Abington’ in a Haitian accent, and the kids are so loose because they’re doing this Abington cheer. It keeps them focused. They let mistakes go.”
A pair of sophomore defensive specialists – Kaelyn Kosik and Liv Craft – were two of the match’s unsung heroes.
“They were great today,” Marsh said. “Everybody was great today. Mary Carter taking over for Izzy (Reilly) has been amazing. Last year she played DS for us. She knew we needed a setter, and all summer she worked to become a setter, and boom – there it is. She’s good. She’s an all-league first teamer, no doubt in my mind.
“We know they’re a really good serving team, and they had a couple of runs. I’ve been coaching volleyball for a long time, and this might have been the best we’ve ever played. We just have to make sure we stay focused.”
The win was the fourth of the season without a loss for a Ghost squad that took a hit to graduation.
“We graduated a lot – we lost our setter and a bunch of seniors, and these sophomores and juniors have stepped up and have played really well, and we’re better than we were last year,” Marsh said. “At this point right now, we’re better. It’s just been a lot of fun.”

Abington (4-0, 1-0 SOL) will travel to Upper Dublin on Thursday, and Hatboro-Horsham will host Bishop Shanahan on Wednesday in a non-league match.

PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 3, UPPER DUBLIN 0
The visiting Colonials earned a sweep of the Cardinals in Tuesday’s conference opener.
“We opened conference play with a nice team win,” PW coach Dave Stewart said. “Our setters spread the ball around with junior Natalie Small having a day at middle blocker with five kills, three aces and three blocks.”
Senior outsides Adriana Storti and Neve Straff had five and seven kills respectively with freshman Marisa Storti seeing action and delivering three kills and four aces.
“Defensively, there were some great saves, and senior Kayla DiGuglielmo led the passing game with 13 digs,” Stewart said.
PW (3-0, 1-0 SOL) host Haverford in a non-league match Thursday. Upper Dublin will host Abington on Thursday.
