It was a first for the Pennridge golf team on Monday when the Rams hosted what was unofficially called the Pennridge Continental Conference Invitational at Indian Valley Country Club. The invitational featured six of the eight Continental Conference schools.
“It has a lot to do with the continued struggle to get access to golf courses,” coach Tim Rimmer said of setting up the invitational. “A lot of us are at private clubs, and obviously, you want to be very sensitive to members and things like that.
“We’ve tossed around the idea of doing our conference match as an invitational format. Mondays are great opportunities because the private clubs are closed.”
The match was structured in an 18-hole invitational format. The front nine scores were counted as Pennridge’s league matches and the back nine as non-league matches, using those scores as additional qualifying scores for the league championships.
“It’s consistent with what the kids are going to see if they continue playing golf in college,” Rimmer said. “They don’t play nine-hole matches in college. They’re playing 18 holes, they’re playing 36 holes, they’re playing 54-hole tournaments over the course of a weekend.
“We’re trying to prepare them for those types of events, but it’s really intended to be a little bit of fun and enjoyable.”
Plaques were awarded to the low individual over the 18 holes as well as the low team. CB West’s Michayla Siemion and Hatboro-Horsham’s Tom Fisher finished in a tie after 18 holes – both shot a 79. Siemion ended up winning on a playoff that is based on the USGA playoff rules using the scores of the last nine holes. Siemion shot a 39 over the final nine while Fisher shot a 42.
Central Bucks West finished the day with the team title, but Pennridge was right behind with a 4-1 mark.
“For us, this is as successful as we’ve been as a team in my five years coaching,” Rimmer said. “The kids spent a lot of time in the offseason working in junior invitational events.
“We were able to get a junior membership approved at Indian Valley, and a lot of kids take advantage of that so that get more access to golf. We have a great professional staff over there that really supports junior golf. They do a lot for the kids, and it’s starting to show.
“For me, it’s been a five-year tour of trying to build a golf culture with the kids. We have a very strong baseball/football community, and it’s trying to get the kids to think, eat and breathe golf. It’s not just something they can do the six weeks of the season. They’ve got to commit themselves in the offseason. A lot of them have, and it’s showing.”
The Rams are 5-2 in league play and at the top of the conference standings with two more matches played than Central Bucks South, which boasts a 4-1 record.
“It’s a neat thing for us,” Rimmer said of his team’s strong start. “It’s a testament to what the kids have done. They see what the investment in time and practice can yield. I’m encouraged, and I’m just hoping good things continue.”
A similar event will be hosted by Central Bucks East next Monday at Lookaway Golf Club, and that invitational will include all eight SOL schools.
“I think everyone liked it, and it was a success,” Rimmer said. “For us, it helps me because I can bring other schools to the course and get my kids exposed to other people, playing teams we don’t typically see.”
