Allentown – It doesn’t matter if it is your very first time or your very last time, the experience of playing in the Carpenter Cup is a wonderful experience. Even if your team is eliminated in the second round by Burlington County, New Jersey – 10-4 - at Coca-Cola Park.
Truman senior Brian Beyer – who will attend the University of North Carolina on a baseball scholarship next year - has been on the Suburban One National/Bicentennial League team for the last three seasons.
“I always look forward to playing in this game,” said Beyer who was on base all three times he came to the plate and collected a pair of hits. “You always want a chance to compete with the best, and you get a chance to measure yourself against all the great players.
“We played hard, but that team can really hit the baseball,” added Beyer – who caught the first five innings of the game. “I couldn’t wait to play in this game, and now I can’t wait to get to play in college.”
Pennsbury sophomore Brandon Garrett made his debut in the Carpenter Cup for the SOL/Bicentennial League squad.
“This was without doubt the best place that I have ever played a baseball game in - it is beautiful,” said Garrett who threw three effective innings and allowed just a single run. “To be able to play with all these Division One players was really exciting and a lot of fun.
“I really didn’t know what to expect playing with players that I have played against all season,” added Garrett. “But they all welcomed me and we all came together as one team.”
Abington head coach Dave Torresani – who has coached the SOL/Bicentennial League team the last five seasons – also looks forward to coaching in the game.
“These are all great kids who play at the highest level of high school baseball,” said Torresani. “The relationships that are developed between the players – and the players and the coaches – are special. We just happened to be the second best team on the field today.”
It didn’t look like that early in the game when the SOL/Bicentennial League opened the top of the first inning with four straight hits and scored a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead.
Mike Tentilucci (Council Rock North) opened the game with a double and went to third in a single by Kyle Tepper (Harry S Truman). Tentilucci scored on an RBI single by Ryan Hartley (Council Rock North) – Beyer singled Tepper to third – and Tepper scored on a sacrifice fly RBI by Tim Lazor (Holy Ghost Prep).
However, Burlington County countered with five runs in the bottom of the first inning and stretched the lead by the close of the seventh inning to 10-2.
“We didn’t hit the ball as well as I thought we would,” said Torresani even though the SOL/Bicentennial had 12 hits. “You have to give their pitchers credit – they all threw strikes.”
The SOL National/Bicentennial League team did not receive a single base on balls. However, Burlington County batters took full advantage of seven walks and a hit batter issued by the SOL/BAL pitching staff.
There were three free passes in the five-run first inning, and three more bases on balls in the three-run fourth inning issued to BC hitters.
The highlight of the game for the SOL/Bicentennial team came in the eighth inning when Burlington County sent flame-throwing Kevin Comer to the mound.
Comer – who was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays with the 57th pick in the latest Major League Draft – has also committed verbally to play Division One baseball at Vanderbilt University.
Comer – who threw in the low 90’s during his two-inning stint – was roughed up by a trio of Council Rock South hitters in the eighth inning.
With one out, Ryan Downs singled. With two outs and Downs on second base, Billy Fleming scorched a blistering double to the gap in left-center field to score Downs. Justin Thomas smoked an RBI single to score Fleming – and that was to become the final score of the game for either team.
“I know that Billy couldn’t wait to get a chance to hit off him,” said Torresani. “And sometimes when your adrenalin and emotion are there, you can handle the big challenges.”
Comer, though, would pitch a scoreless ninth inning - and the scholastic season was finally over for all the Suburban One League players for the 2011 season.
Extra innings –
