Dave Torresani didn’t need a whole lot of words to describe the SOL National/Bicentennial Athletic League squad’s 18-0 drubbing of the Inter-Ac/Independents team in Wednesday’s Carpenter Cup opener for both squads at Richie Ashburn Field.
“We hit early, and we hit often,” the Abington coach said.
The SOL/BAL players not only hit the ball, pounding out 19 hits off of six Inter-Ac/Independents pitchers, they also received stellar pitching performances from four hurlers.
It all added up to the kind of dominance on the diamond few, if any, were expecting to see.
“Granted, they were missing a couple of kids who were drafted, but that doesn’t make up for the fact that we scored 18 runs and they only got three hits,” Torresani said. “This is my fourth year (coaching the Carpenter Cup), and it’s by far the best and most unexpected performance.”
There were stars galore for the SOL/BAL.
Council Rock North’s Darren Lauer got the starting nod on the mound and worked three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three. Council Rock South’s Greg Welsh followed with three near-perfect innings. He fanned the side in the fourth and struck out the first batter he faced in the fifth before issuing a walk. That base runner was erased on a double play.
All told, Welsh faced just nine batters, striking out six. He did not allow a hit.
Neshaminy’s Frank Leonhardt threw two perfect innings, fanning one, and Abington’s Jake Ruch closed it out, allowing a pair of hits while striking out one.
“Our pitching was ridiculous,” Torresani said. “They were just lights out all the way through. They only allowed (three) hits and really just dominated in different ways.
“Darren Lauer moves the ball around, gets people to bite – he has good stuff. Greg Welsh comes in with an almost unhittable slider. He’s just tremendous. Leonhardt and Ruch are different also – Leonhardt is more of a pitcher, and Ruch is more of a power pitcher. We have a nice mix.”
Offensively, the list of big performers is a lengthy one. Holy Ghost’s Greg Olenski was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. Council Rock South’s Jerry Mulderig was 2-for-2 with a home run, three RBIs and a run scored. Truman’s Brian Beyer was 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored.  Rock North’s Tim Filer was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.
The tone for the game, according to Torresani, might well have been set when Council Rock South’s Bill Fleming led off the game with a single to right field off of Haverford School’s Matt Lengel, who will be taking his pitching talents to Villanova this fall.
After Fleming was erased on a forceout, Olenski and Beyer delivered back-to-back singles to load the bases. The SOL/BAL got on the scoreboard when Mulderig lofted a sacrifice fly to deep right, and Olenski scored on an error, staking the SOL/BAL to an early 2-0 lead.
In the second, Council Rock North’s Mike Tentilucci contributed an RBI single while Olenski had a two-run single. Beyer roped an RBI double to right, and Mulderig hit a two-run home run to right. By the time the inning was over, the SOL/BAL led 9-0, and the rout was on.
“The first batter of the game – Billy Fleming – lined a base hit, and I think from there, our guys got a lot of confidence,” Torresani said. “Their pitcher came in with a great reputation and deservedly so.
“Jerry Mulderig hit a sacrifice fly to the 405 mark in deep center field, and then he comes up his next at-bat and hits a two-run home run. Those were a couple of big at-bats.”
In the third, Mulerig contributed an RBI single to up the lead to 10-0.
Filer tripled to left center to open the fourth and scored on a sacrifice fly.
In the fifth, Pennsbury’s Chris Wiertz singled to lead off the frame, and he scored on Olenski’s double to right. Truman’s John Schiotis contributed a sacrifice fly, and when the inning was over, the SOL/BAL led 13-0.
The SOL/BAL did not score in the sixth but tacked on a run in the seventh. Truman’s Tyler Erhard singled and scored on a double by Neshaminy’s John Burns to make it a 14-0 game.
In the eighth, the SOL/BAL added four more runs. Highlights of the inning included singles by Abington’s Scott Schwartz and Schiotis (RBI) as well as three costly Inter-Ac/Independents errors.
“We just wanted to win, whether it was 1-0 or whatever,” Torresani said. “We’re just here to win and move to the next round.
“It gives us a lot of confidence. We have some kids back from two years ago who played on the championship team, and we have some kids back who were on last year’s team that went to the final.”
Not that they needed any more big bats in their lineup – but  according to Torresani, the SOL/BAL was without Christopher Dock’s Ryan Seiz, Council Rock North’s Ryan Hartley, who was the SOL National Conference MVP, Neshaminy’s Rick Brebner and Council Rock South’s Justin Thomas.
The SOL/BAL will face the Lehigh Valley in Monday’s second round at Richie Ashburn Field at 12:30 p.m. Lehigh Valley defeated Chester County 11-4.
