WRESTLING SEASON HEATS UP AS HOLIDAYS APPROACH

By Glenn Kaiser

As SOL wrestlers await the gift of a 2-pound allowance on Christmas day, a lot of action has occurred on the mats.  Council Rock South’s Kyle Waterman was crowned the King of the Mountain at 106lbs at Central Mountain H.S. last weekend, leading the Golden Hawks to a fifth place team finish.  Waterman downed General McLane’s Andrew Brest 8-2 in the championship bout to establish himself as one of the top lightweights in Pennsylvania.

South placed seven wrestlers at the King of the Mountain tourney, finishing behind only four other teams in this 32-team field.  Ben Radner reached the finals at 132 but had to settle for second after dropping an 8-5 decision to Franklin Regional’s Colton Camacho, and Shane Hanson-Ashworth captured the bronze at 126, dominating Brian Gaul from Burrell 8-1. Braden Ricchini decked Bald Eagles’ Garret Giedroc in 1:36 as the Golden Hawks showed their superiority down low even with the absence of Max Mendez in their tournament line-up.

Down in Delaware at the Beast of the East, Pennridge’s Josh Stillings was denied a championship, but won the consolation bracket at 182lbs after losing in the semifinals by a point to Jersey’s Jacob Cardenas of Bergen Catholic 4-3.  Stillings rebounded with a fall in the consi-semis and finished with a 3-1 decision in the third place bout over St. Vincent-St. Mary of Ohio.

Back in Pennsylvania, Council Rock North finished sixth at Penn Manor’s Comet Classic as the Indians put three wrestlers in the finals and snagged a fourth-place medal by Shane Thompson at 138.  Luke Lucerne was the lone champ for the Indians at 120lbs as he downed District One foe Jared Kuhns (Upper Perk) 9-5 in the finals.  Freshman Kyle Hauserman (106) and Cameron Robinson (145) both garnered silver medals as North remains hot to start their 2017-18 season.

Locally, several SOL teams competed at the Ghost Town Duals at Abington H.S.  This longstanding early season dual test has always been a good barometer for teams as they are tested by opponents from the Central, Philly Public and Catholic and PAC leagues.  It was a mixed bag of results for the five competing SOL teams in this pooled 10-team dual event.  Hatboro-Horsham, a team with high expectations, was inconsistent, and consequently finished 2-3 on the day last Saturday.  The Hatters dominated Abington 66-16 in their opening bout, and then lost to an always powerful Spring-Ford team as match-ups and close losses in individual bouts cost them a chance upsetting the Rams, losing 41-25.  A surprisingly strong Northeast team disposed of H-H 49-24 in fourth round action, but the Hatters quickly rebounded with a romping of Penncrest  52-18.  With cross bracketing for the finals, Wissahickon and H-H swapped spots as they will meet later in the season in SOL American competition.  The Hatters could not hang on over Upper Darby, dropping a heartbreaking 37-36 loss as they had to forfeit the final match at 132.

Meanwhile, Wissahickon stumbled against Northeast as well, losing 44-30 and finishing in fourth place.  In earlier action, Wissahickon looked impressive, downing Upper Moreland 42-38 and Upper Darby 49-30.  But a loss to Pennsbury 42-30 put a damper on their day as they also finished 2-3 overall, as did Pennsbury.  Pennsbury downed Penncrest in the seventh place bout 47-27.  Several individuals went 5-0 on the day, H-H’s Nick Chapman (220) finished with five falls to extend his consecutive 10-match win streak with all pins.  Wissy’s Nick Senderling (170), Pennsbury’s Antonio Martoccio (132) and Upper Moreland’s Harry Green (182) all went undefeated on the day to name a few of D1’s top wrestlers.

In SOL dual action this past week, it was Quakertown that set the tone early in the American, winning comfortably over Plymouth-Whitmarsh, 40-24. CRS downed a decent Neshaminy team 43-15 and Pennsbury squeaked by Truman 43-36 in the National and Souderton edged Tennent 39-38 in the Continental.

Action continues over the Holidays locally at Hatboro-Horsham’s 17th Annual Wetzel Holiday Classic Dec 29 (11:30am) & 30 (9am/Finals 5pm).   Nine SOL teams will compete in the Wetzel, and the top five teams in the SOL will travel to Liberty High School to battle in the Bethlehem Holiday Classic.  Meanwhile, Neshaminy, P-W and Tennent will attend the Governor Mifflin Mustang Holiday Tournament.

The Preseason Team Rankings have been adjusted to account for recent action:
