Check out the top finishes for Upper Moreland and Springfield at the PIAA Class AA championships on Saturday.
LEWISBURG The PIAA Class AA swimming championships came to an end on Saturday at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.
Upper Moreland’s Zach Litvin, Jake Matthews, Brennan Coleman and Jake Winters took sixth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:16.99).
“We’re very happy with that time,” Coleman said. “We gained a little bit of time from the prelims (where they posted a 3:16.68) but we’re up there at sixth. That’s where we were seeded and it’s good to hold the spot.
“To get sixth in the state in this relay is fantastic for our senior, Jake Winters. I’m ecstatic.”
Matthews finished 25th in the 500 freestyle (5:00.50).
For the Upper Moreland girls, Colleen Rodrigues made the state podium for the first time in her career with her seventh place finish in diving. She scored 344.80 points.
“I’m thrilled,” said Rodrigues, a junior who finished 20th at last year’s state meet. “I exceeded my goal by a lot.”
Rodrigues was eighth after the preliminaries but dropped to ninth after the semifinals.
“I was really nervous,” she said. “It wasn’t my best meet from the beginning, but seeing that I was eighth after prelims gave me confidence and I just wanted to make all my dives good and not worry about where I placed. That turned out to be the thing to do.
I’m hoping to improve a lot and come back next year and do even better.”
Teammate Kaylee Hermann was 13th in diving (321.05).
The Springfield boys 400 freestyle relay saw the podium, taking eighth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:18.35). Ben Van Meter, Sam Del Rio, Ethan Ford and Jake Corcoran were the relay members.
“We’re very happy with the way we swam the whole meet,” Van Meter said. “We were determined to medal in the 400 and we did it. We did good.”
Van Meter reached the consolation final of the 500 freestyle, finishing 15th (4:45.78).
The 500 freestyle was disrupted by a scoreboard malfunction, which delayed the meet.
“I went up to swim and I had a nice warm buzz in me,” VanMeter said. “That half hour delay just killed me. I went in the water and I was cold but I made the best of it.”
Also for the Spartans, Corcoran was 20th in the 100 freestyle (49.12).
The Springfield girls 400 freestyle relay of Margrethe Leis, Emily Cooney, Alyssa Lorusso and Lizzie Nadolski finished 12th (3:41.60).
Leibfreid was 13th in the 100 backstroke (1:00.37). Alison Currie was 14th in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.31) and Leis 19th in the 500 freestyle (5:18.31) for the Spartans.
