Check out Friday’s SOL SHSHL ice hockey action.
Upper Moreland 5, WilliamTennent 4
By Rick Woelfel
There was an abundance of energy in the air Friday night at the Bucks County Sports Center. Both Upper Moreland and William Tennnet were out to settle the question of which was the team to beat in the SHSHL’s American Division.
The result was a high-intensity hockey game that saw the Golden Bears score four goals in the third period to emerge as 5-4 winners.
Matt Iehle scored the winning goal with 2:03 left in the game to lift his team to 5-2 in the division and 9-3 overall. Upper Moreland trails first-place Wissahickon by two points in the American Division standings, but the Golden Bears have two games in hand. The Panthers slipped to 9-4-2 overall and 4-4 in the division.
“When you get a fast game like this, you’ve got to step it up,” Iehle said. “You’ve got to rev it up, you’ve got to take it to the next level, and that’s what we did today.”
The first period was a scoreless goaltending dual; Upper Moreland’s Patrick Beissel and Tennent’s C.J.Lineman made 27 saves between them.
Colton Arizini put Upper Moreland up 1-0 with a power-play goal 2:44 into the middle period before Sean Ovington answered back for Tennent two minutes later.
Alec Dugan put the Panthers in front for the first time when he scored with 4:52 left in the period.
A short while later, he was at the center of a game-changing sequence of events.
As the final seconds of the period ticked away, Arizini appeared to take Dugan into the boards from behind, but there was no call on the play. Dugan responded by going after Upper Moreland’s Sean Lloyd and drew a minor penalty for head contact plus an automatic 10-minute misconduct.
All but three seconds of the minor penalty carried over into the third period, and Upper Moreland took advantage. Lloyd scored a power-play goal exactly one minute into the final session, and Andy Iehle added an even-strength goal 40 seconds later to put Upper Moreland in front, for good as it turned out.
“Going a man down on these guys is really difficult,” said Tennent assistant coach Jim Fox (head coach Nick D’Auruzio was away at a tournament). “They have some guys that can really skate and some guys that can really shoot. A man disadvantage is definitely not what you want to do against a team like this.”
Matt Iehle extended Upper Moreland’s lead to 4-2 with 6:48 left in the game but Andrew Bean wouldn’t let the Panthers buckle. He weaved his way up the ice and through the Golden Bears to make it a one-goal game with 6:08 still left.
Bean tied the game with 2:40 remaining when he put in a rebound of Jeff Mitchell’s slapshot from the left point.
Just 38 seconds later Iehle scored the game winner seemingly out of nowhere when he converted a feed from Jordin Holmes.
“Jordin made a great play coming down the (left) wing and gave me a pass,” Iehle said. “It hit it off the post, and it went off the goalie’s back and went in.”
Even after the goal, Upper Moreland kept the pressure on; the Panthers weren’t able to get Lineman out of the net until there were just 27 seconds remaining.
Upper Moreland coach Michael Angelo noted the two teams raised each other’s level of play.
“You’ve got to sharpen your pencil and come out with your best game,” he said. “You’ve got the best players in the best situation. You’ve got to watch what you’re doing and adjust your game accordingly.”
