PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 9, WISSAHICKON 4
By Ben Reese
HATFIELD -- Plymouth Whitemarsh is off to a fast start in the American Division of the Suburban High School Hockey League.
The Colonials are 4-0 in league play (7-1 overall) and lead the division over Wednesday’s opponent at Hatfield, Wissahickon.
They also got off to a quick start against the Trojans, scoring four goals in the first period on the way to a 9-4 victory. Their first goal came with only 50 seconds elapsed in the game.
"(We’re) off to a pretty good start this season," said Colonial coach Josh Aiello. "These guys put in a lot of hard work both at practice and in games.
"I'm just excited for the start we've had so far. 2019 has been good but 2020 is going to be a lot harder. We've set big goals for ourselves and we're proud of our accomplishments."
The first two goals for PW came from captain Dean Keller. His first, at the 50-second mark, was unassisted and the second was short-handed at 4:43 with an assist from Ben Lubas, and he added a pair of assists later in the game.
"We're a really close-knit group of guys," Keller said when asked how the team was accomplishing its fast start. "We practice hard and we're really focused.
"When we start the game, we're all business. That's what we try to do."
For the game, the Colonials fired 32 shots on goal against Wissahickon's goalie, who was playing only his second game -- ever.
Michael Bonanni took over in net for the Trojans when their regular goalie was suspended for an infraction in their previous game, never having played the position.
"He took over our last game with 12 minutes left in the second period, " said Wissahickon coach Ken Harrington. "If he didn't put the pads on, we wouldn't have been able to play.
"It was a fairly even game. I wasn't expecting that."
Bonanni impressed Aiello.
"Their goalie had 26 shots on net," Aiello said. "I saw him in warm-ups and I was really impressed for someone who has never really played hockey before. Their goalie played really well."
Keller had something to add about the Trojans' last line of defense.
"Their defense played pretty well in front of him,' he said. "It was tough getting by them."
As noted before, it wasn't too tough for Keller in the early going. His two goals gave PW a lead it would never relinquish.
In fact, less than a minute after Keller scored his second goal, Jake Weikel added a third goal to the total. But Wissahickon came right back at the 6:36 mark as Sam Junker found the net behind PW goalie Ben Yuter.
The Colonials' Luke Weikel got that one back, scoring on the power play at 11:51.
Things calmed down in the second period. Each team scored once, Conlan Carpenter for PW and Alex Carrozza for the Trojans.
Plymouth Whitemarsh again started quickly in the third period. It took Jake Weikel only 27 seconds to beat Bonanni for PW's sixth goal and he added another at the 3:20 mark to put the game out of reach.
The Colonials added two more goals, one each from Luke Weikel and Conor Keogh, and Wissahickon hit for a pair also, from Tyler Schiff and Nolan Ryan.
"Whenever you're going to play Wissahickon, it's going to be a battle," Aiellio said. "We knew it was going to be a challenging game.
"Wissahickon's a really good team. They have a lot of great skaters. Whenever you play against them, it's going to be tough but we're glad we came out on top of this one."
Keller knows that his team has to keep moving forward.
"We've just got to keep our foot on the gas pedal," he said. "We just took penalties in the second period and lost focus of the game for a little bit.
"In the third period, we bounced back with four more goals and took over the game there. We just have to keep our focus on doing that every game."
It has worked so far.
