Matt Stoll – decked out in a red holiday suit – looked as though he was ready for a celebration when he emerged from his team’s locker room.

Moments earlier, Stoll and his Titan teammates celebrated their return to the ice after a two-week layoff by putting on an offensive clinic – all the expense of their sister school.

The Titans held a 44-4 advantage in shots over their neighboring rival.

“(It was) just getting that chemistry back with the team – we hadn’t had a practice or a game since before Christmas,” said Stoll, who had a hand in five goals with two goals and three assists. “I think the last time we were on the ice was Dec. 23rd, so really getting that chemistry back, getting in the whole loop of things, getting the shots on net and just working together.”

It didn’t take the Titans long get that chemistry back – they scored a pair of goals in the opening period and added three more in the second while holding a 33-4 advantage in shots. It was Stoll and Abbonizio scoring in the first period and Stoll, Tyler Boylan and Joe DeLaurentis finding the net in the second.

“Every game we try to play like it’s the best competition,” Stoll said. “We try to play like it’s the Stanley Cup, like it’s the last game we’re going to play.”

This is a Titan team that means business and is taking care of business.

“We don’t look past anybody,” coach Shaun McGinty said. “These are opportunities to play and prepare ourselves as we’re moving on in the season.

“It’s already January. March will be here before we know it. We have a couple of seniors, and the sand is getting out of the hourglass. If they blink, it’s over. It’s the time of year we really have to start peaking.

“We actually look at our games period by period, shift by shift, so after every period, we look at the score clock, we talk about whatever and then it’s gone. We treat every period as its own game. We want to win every period.”

The Titans won every period and then some in Friday’s contest. In the third period, they reeled off five unanswered goals with James Schuler connecting on a pair while Dominick Liberta and Abbonizio each added a goal.  DeLaurentis connected for the final goal 7:22 into the period, bringing an early end to the contest.

“We’re a high-shooting team,” McGinty said. “As a coaching staff, we want a lot of shots. A lot of shots can create a goal, a possible face-off. I look at face-offs like an inbounds pass in basketball – it’s an opportunity for our set plays. I want our players to shoot and the goalies to have to make saves. Shooting wide doesn’t help you at all.”

Perhaps the most impressive part of the Titans’ performance was their ability to take advantage of their power play opportunities, connecting on close to 80 percent of their chances. Stoll also scored a shorthanded goal.

“We really try to focus on the special teams aspect of it,” Stoll said. “Actually, most of our practice is based on special teams.

“We’ve always really been a power play, penalty kill team. We do take pride in that ratio.”

In addition to Stoll, DeLaurentis finished with two goals and three assists, Schuler and Abbonizio each had two goals and an assist while Boylan had a goal and an assist. Adding assists were Evan King, Nick Morelii and Matt Milanesi.

“Matt Stoll had a big game tonight,” McGinty said. “Joey DeLaurentis had a big game. On the back end, defenseman Dominick Liberta played really well, and that’s good for us. He’s a young defenseman we converted from forward to defense. (Assistant coach) Tyler Skorski has been working with him, we’ve been working with him, and he’s coming around.

“We just came off a two-week break. These guys haven’t seen each other or played together in a while, so we needed a game like tonight to just get our legs back, build some continuity, have some fun and move on. We have Father Judge next and our next league game is Pennridge, so we have two good games coming up and we’re looking forward to them.”

Father Judge, a AAA team, is waiting in the wings for the Titans with Pennridge its next conference game.

“We love it - getting a chance to prove ourselves at the AAA level. We look forward to Father Judge, (Holy) Ghost, all those games,” Stoll said. “We just love playing the competition because like Sean (McGinty) says – in order to be the best, you have to play the best.”
