Hatboro-Horsham 2, Upper Dublin 1
All three goals came in a six-minute span in Tuesday's nonleague matchup, and Ryan New assisted on both Hatboro-Horsham goals as the Hatters topped Upper Dublin, 2-1. New contributed helpers to Alex Badulak (51st minute) and Ryan Smith (57th minute). Upper Dublin's lone goal was scored in the 55th minute by Dan Demchick.
"It was good to see the way the guys kept their composure after Upper Dublin tied it," said Hatters' coach Kyle McGrath. "This is the second time this week we had to bounce back after letting up a big goal."
Backs Paul Haggerty and Tommy Hucker and outside midfielder Sean Canepa played well for the Hatters, who finish the season with a Continental Conference matchup against Souderton on Friday. Hatboro-Horsham stands at 5-6-2 (17 points, fifth place) in the conference; the Indians are 4-5-4 (16 points, sixth place). A Hatter win will move them into a tie for fourth in the conference with Central Bucks West.
"I think the winner of that game stands a pretty good chance to get in (to Districts)," McGrath said. "I told the boys at the beginning of the week, depending on how we did, we could end up anywhere from fourth to sixth, but it's up to us. We control where we finish."
Holy Ghost Prep 3, North Penn 0
Traditional district powerhouse Holy Ghost Prep managed the conditions better, and with the wind at their backs in the second half, the Firebirds scored all three goals to defeat North Penn in a nonleague matchup on Thursday.
"They're a really good team," said North Penn coach Paul Duddy. "They took advantage of their chances, had some real nice finishes. This game definitely showed us the things we need to work on."
Ryan Langton played well in the middle for the Continental Conference runners-up, who end the regular season at 11 a.m. Saturday when they host Christopher Dock.
Central Bucks East 2, Abington 1
Sean Jenkins (Ben Marks assist) and Ryan Gleason (Miguel Diaz assist) scored for the Patriots, who improved to 14-2-1 overall with their nonleague victory over Abington on Thursday.
Central Bucks South 2, Malvern Prep 0
Central Bucks South scored once in each half and posted a 2-0 nonleague win against Malvern Prep on Thursday. Patrick Berneski scored (Connor Stackhouse assist) in the 15th minute and Mike Serban (Stephen Pieri assist) found the back of the net in the 60th minute for the Titans.
Central Bucks West 1, Cheltenham 1 (2 OT)
Eighty minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods could not determine a victor as Cheltenham battled Central Bucks West to a 1-1 draw on Thursday.
Stewie Mills scored Cheltenham's only goal, and Brian Henstenburg made 15 saves to preserve the tie.
Wissahickon 2, Neshaminy 0
American Conference champion Wisssahickon received a goal each from senior captains Stefan Dasbach and Dan Matthews and downed Neshaminy in Thursday's non-league matchup. Neal Guaglianone made saves to record the shutout for the Trojans.
William Tennent 1, Pennsbury 0
Johnnie Cialantre scored the game's only goal as William Tennent defeated Pennsbury for the second time this week (the Panthers won Tuesday's game, 3-0).
GIRLS SOCCER
Pennsbury 2, Bensalem 1
Pennsbury scored two quick goals early in the second half and then held off a Bensalem rally attempt to come away with a 2-1 win in Thursday's National Conference matchup.
"Bensalem played well today," said Pennsbury coach Kaitlyn Battiste. "They're really starting to get a lot of things going there. We were fortunate to get out of there with a victory."
Kym Brewton (Uche Onuoha assist) put Pennsbury on the board in the 42nd minute. Lexi Brown made it 2-0 just four minutes later. Bensalem tallied their lone goal in the 50th minute when freshman Sarah Smith scored.
"We couldn't get much of a rhythm going today," Battiste said. "But it's a win we need. We're hoping to continue with a big game (Friday) against Neshaminy."
The Redskins host the Falcons at 3:30 p.m. Friday. The local rivals sit in third and fourth place in the National Conference, with Neshaminy at 10-3 for 30 points and Pennsbury at 7-4-2 for 23 points.
Archbishop Wood 4, Neshaminy 2
Neshaminy matched last season's state runner-up Archbishop Wood goal for goal for a time in Thursday's nonleague matchup, but the Vikings scored two late goals to pull away for a 4-2 victory.
After Wood scored first, Neshaminy answered on a goal by Dana Knapp (Jamie Mason assist). Wood went up 2-1, then Mason set up Knapp again to tie the score at 2-2, but a pair of goals from Wood's Aubree Brown made the difference.
Conestoga 1, Council Rock North 0
Coach Larry Sullivan wasn't so much concerned with the final score of Thursday's nonleague game, which saw Conestoga hand Council Rock North its second defeat of the season.
Sullivan had a chance to try some new looks on the field, as well as some new players in new positions. In that sense, the game served its purpose. However, Sullivan said the lack of effort from some of the players gives him cause to be concerned.
"Playing at home, after the season we had, this game was a bit of a letdown," Sullivan said. "Honestly, I'm a bit concerned. You look at some of the games we won: Neshaminy beat us 1-0. We beat South 1-0 both times, we beat Pennsbury 1-0 at Pennsbury. We do have some shortcomings that are going to stick out if the girls don't do something about it.
"The girls were definitely not as intense today. Maybe everything comes back when the playoffs start. Can we do it? Yes, we can. Will we do it? I don't know who's going to show up. Today, the girls seemed content with themselves, and you can't have that."
Hatboro-Horsham 3, Cheltenham 0
Hatboro-Horsham defeated Cheltenham in Thursday's nonleague matchup to finish the season at 13-3-1 overall (10-3-1, second place in the Continental Conference).
Gina Mallinder (Maria Guerra assist), Mary Kate Bateman (Ramsey McMenemin assist) and Kelsey Shafer (Rachel Kaplan assist) accounted for the Hatter scoring, while Lindsey Day posted the shutout in goal. The Hatters also received strong play from Ally Gutekunst.
Central Bucks South 3, William Tennent 2
Tori Milano, Taylor Matsinger and Margo Fox scored for Central Bucks South, which topped William Tennent in Thursday's nonleague matchup.
Penncrest 1, Abington 0
Penncrest scored with three minutes to play to steal a victory on Abington's senior night. The Galloping Ghosts honored departing seniors Colleen Brown, Ali Dobson, Emily Elder, Ciera Ellison, Emily Ryan, Julie Gallager, Cindy Wade, Emily Willard and Gabby Nyirjesy prior to the game. The Ghosts end the season at 1-13 overall, 1-12 in the National Conference.
