GIRLS SOCCER
North Penn 3, Lansdale Catholic 0
The Maidens' Lizzy Kohler opened the scoring five minutes in, and Cassie Hewlett added another in the 29th minute en route to a 3-0 win over non-league foe Lansdale Catholic on Friday.
Elizabeth Ricci capped off the scoring in the 51st minute.
"We asked the girls to come out right away, start off this new season and make a statement," said North Penn coach Jim Dehner. "They did that and they didn't let up."
North Penn held a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal, while LC had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. LC keeper Alyssa Messina recorded six saves, while North Penn freshman goalie Laura Leonard made three stops in posting the shutout.
"Laura did a really nice job," Dehner said. "She made the stops when she needed to, she came out when she needed to come out. She did a nice job out there."
Behner also praised the efforts of Lauren Williams, who split time in the midfield and backfield, as well as the defensive back line of Ashley Vaitis, Katie Huber, Haley Mangiaruga and Allie Smith.
Hatboro-Horsham 5, Unionville 2
The Hatters received two goals each from forwards Tory Adlam and Mary Kate Bateman, and Kellie McGouldrick
added a solo tally, as the Hatters earned a hard-fought 5-2 win over host Unionville.
The Hatters scored the first two goals and took a 2-1 lead into the half. They added two more before Unionville cut the lead to 4-2, but the Hatters added an insurance goal just a minute later.
"We played well," said H-H coach Ben Winderman. "This was exactly what you want from a first game. It sounds like it was a comfortable win, but they were just as good as us. We finished really well, and every time they made it close, we didn’t tighten up, the girls responded."
Lindsey Day made seven saves in net for the Hatters, who outshot Unionville 13-8 and held a 5-4 edge in corners.
St. Hubert's 1, Bensalem 0
Missed opportunities cost Bensalem, and a St. Hubert's goal with five minutes left in the game stood as the only one of the game.
Owls coach Lew Mladjen said he believed his team - which dropped a 6-1 decision to St. Hubert's last season - outplayed their hosts this time around, but were unable to finish, including a potential game-tying breakaway in the final minutes of the game.
"We're moving in the right direction," Mladjen said of his team, which started three freshmen. "Hopefully we can patch it together. We're talented, there's no question about that. We just have to make sure we're moving in the right direction."
Mladjen credited sophomore defender Christine Cueto for her solid play in the backfield.
Pennsbury 1, Great Valley 1
Freshman Amy Blazejewski scored for Pennsbury (assist from Jackie Sweeney) in the 31st minute, but host Great Valley knotted the score in the second half and neither team could break the deadlock.
"We had a really great first half. We played a little too defensively in the second half and they got an opportunity and the finished," said Pennsbury coach Kaitlyn Battiste. "We would've loved the W, but we'll learn from it. We had a great first half, we just have to put two complete halves together."
Sophomore Courtney Bennett made seven saves for the Falcons, who also received a strong defensive effort from Cassandra Berger.
Archbishop Wood 2, Central Bucks South 0
A young Central Bucks South team played well, but ultimately fell to Archbishop Wood in its season-opener. Wood scored its first goal in the 48th minute.
"We're still sorting some things out," said coach Joe Bocklet, who graduated 10 seniors from last season's squad. "I'm comfortable with how the game transpired. There are a lot of people getting into new starting roles. I thought they played well."
Meghan Kaminski and Megan Radwanski split time in the South net, combining for five saves. South was outshot 8-6 in the game and Wood held a 7-2 advantage in penalty kicks.
Alex Redding and Kendall Brodie played well in the defensive end for South, while Emily Casey was solid in midfield.
Downingtown West 3, Neshaminy 2
Neshaminy led twice in its season-opener, but Downingtown West rallied twice, then netted the game-winning goal in the 77th minute to edge the Redskins in a hard-fought non-league game.
"I'm pleased with the overall team effort," said Neshaminy coach Rachel Clemens. "We played well. It was a very back-and-forth game. We had a couple chances and we didn't finish and Downingtown West did.
"Certainly, we have things to work on, but overall I'm happy with the effort today."
Jamie Mason opened the scoring (Erin Farrell assist) in the sixth minute for Neshaminy, but West knotted the score two minutes later. National Conference 2010 Player of the Year, sophomore Megan Schafer (Mason assist) put Neshaminy back on top in the 41st minute, but West answered with two goals in the final 14 minutes to take the win.
McKenna Mullin made nine saves for Neshaminy.
BOYS SOCCER
Abington 2, Cheltenham 1 (OT)
Kenny Sheppard scored seven minutes into overtime off an assist from Steven Dillon to give Abington a come-from-behind victory over the host Panthers on Friday morning. Kyle Rocks scored off an Isaac Pickow corner kick 10 minutes into the second half to tie the score at 1-1.
"We looked extremely sloppy, especially in the first half," said Abington coach Randy Garber. "We played a much better second half. Cheltenham pretty much beat us to the ball throughout the first half. They're a scrappy little team.
"This was, by all means, not our best performance, but it's our first game, so it gave us a chance to get those jitters out and see what we'll need to work on."
Garber also praised the efforts of midfielder Billy Natter and defender Andrew Brennan.
North Penn 5, Lansdale Catholic 0
The Knights scored a pair of goals within a one minute span early in the first half and never looked back, rolling to the big win.
“That was a real important part of the game,” coach Paul Duddy said of his team’s two-goal surge. “We had the possession, but we weren’t getting that any good shots.
“All of a sudden, we get two within a minute, and that was just huge to the outcome, the confidence and everything else.”
The Knights – who lost the nucleus of last year’s squad to graduation – didn’t look the part of an inexperienced squad as they outshot the Crusaders 12-3.
“We did lose all of our big guys from last year, but I think we make up for it with our technical pieces,” senior Alex Evans said. “We play well together and we all know each other.”
Evans was one of five players contributing goals for the Knights. Also getting into the scoring column were Brian Zolot, Curtis Washburn, Matt Robinson and Matt Ross. Zolot, Washburn, Drew Lightfoot and Ryan Langton each contributed an assist.
Harry S Truman 2, Academy Park 0
Shane Harder scored two goals, one in the 12th minute and a second in the 25th minute, and Eric Gutierrez needed to make only one save to record the shutout, as Harry S Truman opened the season with a 2-0 win over non-league opponent Academy Park.
Furkan Celik and Michael Camacho recorded assists on Harder's goals.
"We played very well," said Truman coach Scott Milone. "Getting an early lead gives you a chance to work on some things you need to work on. It was a good way to start the season."
Central Bucks South 1, Christopher Dock 0
Jarrod Meyer netted the only goal of the game off a corner kick to give Central Bucks South the victory over its non-league opponents. Bryan Brady took the kick and Pat Berneski headed the ball over to Meyer, who finished the play.
"Jarod just followed the play perfectly," coach Don Brady said. "Everything went perfectly and he was able to knock it in.:
Shots were even at 9-9, but South held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Brady praised the team's "phenomenal" defensive effort, backstopped by keeper Matt Weigner (five saves).
Pennsbury 5, Strath Haven 1
Pennsbury scored three goals in the first half and never looked back, downing Strath Haven in Friday's season-opener. Evan Caterson finished with three goals, one assist and drew a penalty kick for the Falcons.
Dylan Smith had one goal and captain Sawyer Waters capped off a strong defensive performance with a goal of his own. Brendan Cooper, Charlie Rushingand Jerry Lan each recorded an assist.
"We were pretty sharp right from the get-go," said Pennsbury coach Tom Stoddart. "And Evan was giving them all sorts of problems all day."
Pat Lestingi was solid in goal for the Falcons, including a terrific save just after Strath Haven had cut the score to 3-1.
Upper Merion 4, Chichester 0
The Vikings received goals from Cameron McDaniel (2), Andrew Koresko and Jake Minnich. Kevin O'Sullivan recorded seven saves in goal for the shutout.
Easton 1, Pennridge 0
Easton scored on a penalty kick with 20 minutes left in the second half as the Rams dropped Friday's non-league season-opener.
