WISSAHICKON 2, ABINGTON 0
Katie Ziegler did it all for the Trojans in Friday’s season opener. Wissahickon’s senior mound ace fanned 15 and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning when Raechel Holden doubled to right field. Holden was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple, and Ziegler retired the next two batters she faced to ice the win.
For good measure, Ziegler also delivered an RBI triple.
“She’s just a master at her job,” coach Johnny Bilella said. “She works hard all week, and she takes a leadership role.
“She talks to the catcher after every inning, and she takes complete control of the game.”
The Trojans, who collected six hits, scored both of their runs in the fifth. The second run crossed the plate on an error. Brittany Gelman led the Trojans with a pair of hits.”
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 8, WILLIAM TENNENT 7
The Patriots twice rallied from behind to win a wild season opener against the visiting Panthers. They won it in the bottom of the seventh when the game winner crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
“I am really proud of them,” coach Erin Scott said. “To start out our season like that with a relatively young team and to be able to come back like that this early in the season – we had a conversation last week because people weren’t intense and focused in our scrimmage.
“I think today we came out, and it was the complete opposite. They were ready to go. They had that focus and intensity. They didn’t get down on themselves, they stayed confident, and they stayed composed.”
Things didn’t really look all that promising for the Patriots after the visiting Panthers opened up a 4-0 lead in the top of the first.
“We had a little bit of a rough start,” Scott said. “They had a couple of hits that fell in – they just hit them to the right spot, and on top of that, we had three errors, which is kind of atypical for us.”
After surviving the first inning, East’s mound duo of Sierra Huckfeldt and Jayme Ziegler allowed just one base runner through the next five innings, but the Panthers still led 4-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
“We had a hit here and a hit there, but we couldn’t line them up together,” Scott said.
All that changed in the sixth inning when the Patriots exploded for six runs. Kerry Schulz, who led the Patriots with three hits, got things started with a bunt single, and Allie Chase made it a 4-2 game with one swing of the bat, delivering a two-run home run to left field. A walk set the stage for Jess Haug’s one-out RBI double, making it a 4-3 game, and the two teams were deadlocked after Sarah Decker reached base on an error.
Huckfeldt, who had been relieved on the mound by Ziegler, re-entered the game and delivered an RBI triple, and she crossed the plate on sophomore Danielle Marzetti’s bunt, putting the Patriots on top 6-4 heading into the seventh.
The Panthers opened the seventh with back-to-back singles and then went to small ball.
“They bunted three straight hitters, and for whatever reason, we couldn’t make the right decision,” Scott said. “We missed getting two people out trying to come home.”
By the time the inning was over, the Panthers were back on top 7-6, but the Patriots weren’t finished yet.
Schulz once again got things started with a bunt single, and she scored the tying run when –with one out - Julia Schoenewald delivered an RBI triple.
“In the beginning, people were hitting, but it wasn’t falling into place,” Scott said. “The one thing we said to them before the sixth inning was they just needed to be more disciplined at the plate because they were being overly aggressive.
“Talk about coachable – they went out there and listened to exactly what we said. They made the pitcher work.”
Huckfeldt contributed a pair of hits for the Patriots while the Panthers were led by the two-hit effort of Laura Petri, who contributed a triple.

QUAKERTOWN 7, PALISADES 3
Jess Cramp fanned 10 batters in a complete game performance that saw the Panthers take an early lead they never lost against the Pirates.
“This was an important win,” coach Rich Scott said. “We need to win the games that we should win. We can’t take any team lightly - when we’re supposed to win, we need to win.
“I’m kind of disappointed – we didn’t hit well. We practiced all week against fast pitching, and they weren’t fast pitchers.”
The Panthers scored two runs in the first, thanks to a two-run single from Emily Reis. After Palisades cut that lead in half in the second, the Panthers added two more runs in the second.
Palisades plated a single run in the third to make it a 4-2 game and pulled to within one in the fifth, but in the bottom of the inning, the Panthers received a two run single from Brittny Buonanno-Taylor to spark a three-run outburst for the 7-3 final.
Janelle Croisette, Maddie Calder and Becca Robison each scored two runs for the Panthers.
PENNRIDGE 3, UPPER PERKIOMEN 2 (10 INNINGS)
The Rams rallied from a 2-0 deficit to earn the win in extra innings. The Rams knotted the score with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Lisa Bahmueller got things started with a bunt single, and the Rams had runners on second and third when Bridget Casey’s bunt was misplayed into a two-base error. Both runners scored when Emily Mayhew delivered a single to center.
The Rams won it in the 10th with the international tiebreaker in effect but not before second baseman Alison Horne turned a line drive into an inning-ending double play in the top of the inning. The Rams started their half of the 10th with Alicia Phillips on second. She moved up to third on Mayhew’s bunt. Brooke Labs was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and the Rams won it when Haley Taylor delivered a sacrifice fly to right center that plated Phillips.
Paige DeCew earned the win on the mound, striking out six and walking just one while scattering five hits and allowing only one earned run in 10 innings of work.
CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 17, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 6 (6 INNINGS)
The Bucks pounded out 21 hits in the abbreviated win. They were led by the 5-for-5 effort of Gina Schnecker, who also contributed four RBIs. Cassie Zanolini was 4-for-4 with three runs scored, and Jess D’Agostino was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
Maggie Miller earned the win on the mound, allowing six runs on eight hits while fanning three and walking one.
CHRISTOPHER DOCK 2, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 1
CB South’s bats were silenced by Dock hurler Keli Krause in Friday’s non-league opener. The Titans managed just five hits, and that wasn’t enough to defeat a Dock squad that last year advanced to the state semifinals in Class AA competition.
The Pioneers plated an unearned run in the first when Holly Seiz, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a two-out throwing error. The Titans got that run back in the fourth when Morgan Decker lofted an RBI double to the right field fence. The Pioneers plated the game winner in the fifth when Seiz delivered an RBI double. The Titans had a runner thrown out at the plate in the sixth. That’s as close as they would get to knotting the score.
HATBORO-HORSHAM 7, HARRY S TRUMAN 1
Jackie DiPietro and Val Sadowl each collected a pair of hits in the season opener for the defending state champion Hatters. Sadowl was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. DiPietro also scored a run. Chrissy James contributed one hit and scored two runs while Kelsey Koelzer collected a double and three RBIs.
Senior Maggie Shaffer earned the win, allowing just one hit in five innings while fanning six and walking one. Nicole Casagrand threw the final two innings, allowing a pair of hits and one run while striking out two and walking one.
