National Conference
ABINGTON 8, BENSALEM 6
Abington exploded for five runs in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie, and although the Owls did not go down quietly, the Ghosts held on for the big win.
“The key was definitely putting the ball in play,” Abington coach Ellie White said. “The kids had good pitch selection. They were disciplined at the plate.
“They have a good pitcher (Jackie Morell). She has good movement on her ball. She definitely keeps that team in games, and he (Dan Schram) is doing a great job with them.”
The pivotal five-run fifth began with a leadoff walk to Emily Willard and featured three consecutive singles by Grace Kim, Rachel Holden (RBI) and Celine Farina (RBI). A run scored on a wild pitch, and with a runner on third and two outs, Rachel DeCarlo delivered a clutch RBI single up the middle, giving the Ghosts a 7-2 lead.
The Owls answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, and the two teams exchanged runs in the sixth to make it an 8-5 game before the Owls added a single run in the seventh.
“This was big,” White said. “Yesterday we did all hitting in practice because we knew she was a good pitcher. We did a lot of drills that would help us hit her, and we did that.
“We put the ball in play, we had a few steals, and when you put the ball in play, anything can happen.”
Emily Willard was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Kim was 2-for-3, and Holden was 2-for-4.
The win was the second of the week for the Ghosts, who have been without starting catcher Angie LaMaina (injured) for the past two weeks.
“Emily McKay is doing a great job back there until Angie can come back,” White said.
While the Ghosts improved to 2-3 in league play (6-5 overall), the Owls fell to 1-4 in the league (5-4 overall).
NESHAMINY 9, WILLIAM TENNENT 3
Lauren Quense did it all for the Redskins in Wednesday’s win.
The junior hurler fanned 13 and scattered three hits while walking only one and allowing just one earned run. She was even more impressive at the plate where she crushed a grand slam over the left field fence in the third inning.
The Redskins, who collected nine hits, also received multi-hit performances from Diana LaPalombara and Laura Altenburger.
Nikki Alden contributed an RBI double for the Panthers. She also absorbed the loss on the mound.
The Redskins remain perfect, improving to 4-0 in the league (8-0 overall). The Panthers are 1-4 in the league (6-5 overall).
COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 10, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 0 (5 innings)
The Indians pounded out 12 hits in the abbreviated five-inning game. They were sparked by the two-hit efforts of Alyssa Goldberg, Marissa Gergel (double), Tatum Kelly (triple) and Bailey Bigler (double, triple). Kelly and Bigler both scored three runs. Dom Pinto, Michelle Hand and Hannah Mumber also had doubles as the Indians pounded out seven extra-base hits.
The Indians seized early control of the game, plating three runs in the second and adding two more in the third. A three-run fourth inning was followed by a two-run fifth as the Indians brought an early end to the game.
Hannah Mumber earned the win on the mound, scattering three hits while fanning three and walking none.
The Indians upped their league mark to 3-2 (6-2 overall) while the Golden Hawks fell to 1-4 in the league (2-7 overall).
Continental Conference
SOUDERTON 5, PENNRIDGE 2
The Indians broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the third inning to earn the win in Wednesday’s battle between the neighboring rivals.
“This was a really important game – a crosstown battle,” Souderton coach Courtney Hughes said. “Our girls were really amped up for it.
“We’re trying to get some continuity with how we’re playing, and that’s what was so important – finding that consistency. I don’t know if it’s the way we get up for certain teams, but we’re trying to figure it out as we go along.
“That’s what was good about tonight. All parts of the game were there. The offense was the part I expect more out of, but we played really solid defense even when calls didn’t go our way.”
According to the Indians’ coach, the Rams loaded the bases in the fourth inning after several questionable calls, but the Indians escaped unscathed.
“It was really good to see the girls fight, which I’m hoping is a turning point for us,” Hughes said. “In the past, we’ve maybe let in a run here and there when stuff like that happened, but we really didn’t tonight, which was huge.”
The Rams actually held an 8-7 edge in hits, but the Indians made the most of theirs.
Sarah Derstine had a huge day at the plate for the Indians, finishing the day a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, home run and three RBIs.
“Sarah played out of her mind tonight,” Hughes said. “She had several key defensive plays and offensively was 3-for-3. Pennridge intentionally walked her in the fifth to keep her from causing more damage than she already did.”
Paige Shelly, Nikki Canfield and Corrine Stiles also contributed extra base hits in the win. Defensively, according to Hughes, the Indians were solid.
Emily Mayhew (2-for-4) and Paige DeCew (2-for-3) let the Rams offensively.
Heather Milligan got the start for the Indians, and after allowing a run in the first, she kept the Rams off the board for four innings. Meghan Weisel entered the game in the fifth and allowed only three hits on her way to earning her first career win.
The Indians are 3-2 in league play (4-4 overall) while the Rams fell to 1-4 in the league (4-7 overall).
CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 7, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 6
The Titans appeared to be cruising to a lopsided win, but the Patriots had other ideas, scoring five runs in a gutsy seventh-inning rally that came up just short.
“This is a bittersweet loss,” East coach Erin Scott said. “This is the best game my team has played against South in my four years coaching here, but it is disappointing to know we could have won the game.
“It was a great comeback, and overall, the team had a great game. I’m really proud of them for that, but there are a few mistakes we made that hurt us. South is one of the strongest teams in the league and in the state – they are extremely talented, and every person in their lineup can hit.
“I knew my team was going to have to play a flawless game and not leave runners in scoring position to win the game. We’ve had a shaky start to the season, but I think things are starting to come together for this group.”
South took an early 3-0 lead, sparked by singles by Jae Epstein and Haileigh Stocks and an RBI double from Morgan Decker. Lauren Klepchick (two RBIs) and Kristyn Marinelli also contributed key singles.
East got one of those runs back in the second when Sarah Decker collected a two-out single, Danielle Marzetti drew a walk, and Caroline Schoenewald delivered a clutch RBI single.
The Titans scored two runs in the third when Hallie Bilker delivered a solo home run and – after an East error – Marinelli collected an RBI single to put South on top 5-1. The Titans added single runs in the sixth and seventh to up that lead to 7-1 before the Patriots’ bats came to life in the bottom of the seventh.
Carla Ruscio drew a leadoff walk, and Allie Chase followed with a single. Consecutive singles by Julia Schoenewald, Kaylynn Johnson and Caroline Schoenewald kept the rally alive. Sierra Huckfelt’s grounder advanced the runners, and Marzetti picked up a walk. The inning and game ended when – with the bases loaded - the Titans collected the game’s final out on a popup to short.
The Patriots left six runners in scoring position, and South left five runners in scoring position. The Titans pounded out 14 hits. Decker had a pair of doubles while Marinelli and Michelle Gessner also each had a double. Haileigh Stocks added a triple.
Stocks earned the win on the mound, allowing nine hits while fanning five and walking five. Four of the walks were to Danielle Marzetti. Gessner turned in another solid performance at shortstop for the Titans.
The Titans improved to 5-0 in league play (8-1 overall) while the Patriots fell to 1-4 in the league (3-6 overall).
NORTH PENN 13, QUAKERTOWN 2 (5 innings)
Sophomore Vicky Tumasz returned to the mound after being sidelined with an injury and earned the win, allowing three hits while walking five.
Michele Holweger had a monster game for the Maidens, finishing the afternoon 3-for-3 with three runs scored and six RBIs. Hannah Sheehan was 2-for-2 with a home run, and Morgan Wiernusz was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Maidens improved to 4-1 in league play (5-3 overall) while the Panthers saw their record fall to 0-5 in the league (1-8 overall).
HATBORO-HORSHAM 6, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 4
The Hatters scored four runs in the first and added a single run in the second to take an early 5-0 lead, but the Bucks made things interesting with one swing of the bat when Amanda Wolfgang ripped a three-run home run in the fifth inning, cutting the Hatters’ lead to 5-3. Freshman Jen Sader hit her first varsity home run to give the Hatters insurance.
The Hatters were led by the 3-for-4 effort of senior Jackie DiPietro, which included a triple and two runs scored. Chrissy James had a pair of RBIs.
With the win, the Hatters improved to 5-0 in conference play (9-0 overall) while the Bucks are 1-4 in league play (4-6 overall).
American Conference
NORRISTOWN 6, CHELTENHAM 1
The Eagles set the tone for Wednesday’s important win with a four-run first inning.
“We went out yesterday and had a good start,” Norristown coach Jim McCarthy said of his team’s 8-5 non-league win over Pope John Paul II. “The kids have been working hard trying to prepare for the game.
“Early on in the season – the difference between what we’re seeing now and at that point was we were hitting the ball, but we just weren’t stringing our hits together. Now we’re getting a base runner on, and we’re moving them in a timely fashion and stringing hits together, and it’s paying off.”
In the four-run first, Sammi Kid delivered an RBI single. Taylor Copestick reached first on an error, and Sammy Kampmeier delivered a clutch two-run single.
The Eagles added two more runs in the fourth to go on top 6-0 before Cheltenham plated its only run – which was unearned - in the top of the seventh.
Offensively, the Eagles were led by the performances of Sarah Rosetti (2-for-3), Kidd (2-for-2) and Kampmier (2-for-3).
Brianna Kennedy tossed a gem on the mound for the Eagles, allowing just one hit while fanning eight and walking three.
Lesenia Santiago absorbed the loss, allowing seven hits and three earned runs while striking out six and walking three.
While the Eagles improved to 2-3 in the league (4-7 overall), the Panthers fell to 2-2 in the league (4-6 overall).
UPPER DUBLIN 15, UPPER MORELAND 3 (5 innings)
The Flying Cardinals spotted the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but got those runs back in the bottom of the inning and took a lead they would not lose in a four-run second. They added five more runs in the third and four more in the fourth to bring an early end to the game.
Ashleigh Sharp continued her torrid offensive production out of the leadoff spot, finishing the day 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Rachel Hyman also was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, and Sarah Rosenbaum was 2-for-3 with four RBIs.
For the Golden Bears, Katie Costello was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a double. Lynch also was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.
Kristin Ganderton earned the win on the mound, allowing five hits while walking one and striking out two.
The Flying Cardinals are 3-2 in the SOL (5-4 overall) while the Golden Bears fell to 0-4 in the league (0-10 overall).
WISSAHICKON 8, UPPER MERION 4
The Trojans broke a 4-4 tie with a four-run outburst in the top of the seventh to earn the win in the key conference battle. Meredith Byrne delivered the big blow – a bases-clearing double.
Also coming up big for the Trojans in Wednesday’s win was leadoff batter Rebecca Maranucci, who had a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Katie Ziegler was 3-for-4 with one RBI. Alex Comontoski also had a pair of hits for the Trojans.
Both teams collected eight hits. The Trojans had one error while the Vikings had three. Nicole Priest and Maddalana Ghanayem both contributed doubles for the Vikings
