UPPER MORELAND 7, SPRINGFIELD TWP 0
The Golden Bears saved their best for last, breaking a scoreless tie with a seven-run explosion in the top of the seventh inning.
Delaney Stout turned in another gem in the circle, allowing two hits in seven shutout innings while striking out 14. She also had a pair of doubles in the seven-run seventh and two RBIs.
Springfield’s Julia Mathews took a shutout into the seventh inning in a strong outing of her own.
By the numbers: Upper Moreland: Delaney Stout (2-for-4, 2 2B, 2RBI), Stephanie Jones (2-for-3, 1R), Claire Walton (1-for-2, 2RBI, 1R)
Delaney Stout (W) (7 IP, 2H, 0R, 1BB, 14K)
Key inning: Top of seventh: Stout led off the inning with a double to center and was replaced by courtesy runner Savannah Anderson, who advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Erin Distel. Jones followed with a single, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. With two outs, Walton delivered a clutch two-run single to center. Kelly Bates drew a base on balls, and Sofia Magagna lined an RBI single to center. An error allowed a run to score, and Stout hit her second double of the inning – this one to right field that plated a pair. (7-0)
Upper Moreland coach Melanie Martino: “Springfield is always a good game - we really enjoy playing them. They are a very well-coached team and always competitive. The 7-0 win for us is not indicative of the whole game. It was 0-0 going into the seventh.
“Our defense really came together today and played clean. As coaches, we were pleased with how well we were swinging the bat today. Nice hard-hit balls throughout, and finally, in the seventh, we started finding some holes.”
--Props: “I have to commend our freshman catcher, Sofia Magagna, for the job she has been doing for us, not just behind the plate, but she is consistently helping us at bat as well. She's been a great addition this year.
“Also, our pitcher, Delaney Stout, was outstanding today with 14 strikeouts and only letting up two hits. She also had a great day at the plate with two hits, including a double and RBI.
“Stephanie Jones also picked up two hits today. Along with Erin Distel who continues to come up with key hits for us game after game. Claire Walton also picked up a hit with two RBIs today. It was a good day for us all around.”
Up next: Upper Moreland (5-2, 2-1 SOL) will be on the road at Lower Moreland on Tuesday, and Springfield Twp (2-5, 1-3) will be on the road at Abington for a non-league game.
