Hatboro-Horsham 7, North Penn 2
The Hatters jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Maidens got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the seventh inning.
They seized control of the game early, benefitting from three Maiden errors to plate three first-inning runs. Val Sadowl delivered the inning’s big blow – an RBI triple.
The Hatters added a pair of runs in the third. Chelsea Edwards, who had a pair of hits, led off the inning with a solo shot over the left field fence. Melissa Spinosa drew a base on balls, and Danielle DiFilippo brought her home with an RBI double to left field.
Maggie Shaffer took a no-hitter into the fourth when sophomore Jess Mower led off the frame with a double. The Maidens had a pair of runners on board after Steph Farrar hit a bloop single over second, but with runners on second and third and two outs, Shaffer came up with a big strikeout, and the threat ended when she retired the next batter on a groundout to second.
Miranda Sergas accounted for both North Penn runs with a two-run homerun in the seventh.
Coach Kelly Krier was most pleased to see her team get on the board early. She also lauded the play of her outfield.
“Megan Kelly made a running catch in the bottom of the seventh – I don’t know how she got it. It was deep in center field, and she stuck her glove up and pulled it in. That saved a run. Heather Lutz stepped up and had some really nice plays in the outfield as well.”
As a result of the win, the Hatters are 6-3 and find themselves alone in second place, trailing Central Bucks South by three games. The Maidens fell to 5-4.
