Check out the top finishers of the Cardinal Classic Invitational at Upper Dublin on Saturday.
The Cardinal Classic Invitational, an annual meet hosted by Upper Dublin, has rapidly become a favorite pre-holiday event, and with good reason.
Every year there are some outstanding swims.
This year was no different.
While Hershey dominated the meet for both boys and girls, there were plenty of good swims from the SOL.
Host Upper Dublin’s Michael Jensen made a statement, taking first place in back-to-back events.
Jensen won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:52.72, the pool record of 1:53.13 set last year by Mike Thomas of Hatboro-Horsham and the school record of 1:53.53 by Christopher Devlin, also last year.
He then won the 50 freestyle in 20.76, lowering his own pool record of 20.80 earlier this year and the school record of 20.89 by Bobby Bantley in 2012.
“Having teams like Hershey here was really good,” said Jensen, a junior. “I think it’s nice to have that kind of competition against a team you don’t swim every day.
“I don’t have huge expectations for myself in a meet like this because I’m pointed more toward the end of the season so, at a meet like this, I like to mix it up and have some fun. It’s still nice to swim well and see where I’m at and a couple of pool records are always nice.
“I’ve been training hard and I was hoping for some good swims. Our team swam well here and I think we’re shaping up to be pretty good. I’m excited to see how this season goes for us.”
Two of his teammates also had first place finishes.
Devon Polak won the 100 freestyle (48.52) and Wyatt Amdor won the 100 breaststroke (57.67).
The Upper Dublin boys took third in all three relays.
Jensen, Amdor, Polak and Bart Scherpbier finished second (1:36.44) in the 200 medley relay, Amdor, Scherpbier, Alex Flynn and Jensen were second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:29.35) and the team of Ogden Leyens, Scott Luttmann, Polak and Flynn were second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:18.01).
Mike Thomas of Hatboro-Horsham showed his versatility, swimming two unique events for him.
Typically one would expect to see him in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, but he shook things up and won the 100 butterfly (49.53) and took third in the 100 breaststroke (58.72).
“Coming off the meet in Seattle, I was trying to change it up and do something different,” said Thomas, a senior who will swim at California next year. “It was fun and I’m happy with how I swam. I’m really pumped about those times.”
He also anchored the third place 400 freestyle relay for teammates Andy Thomas, Sean Claggett and Tim Reilly, (3:18.60).
Allen Shmurak of Council Rock North took third in the 500 freestyle (5:00.41).
William Tennent’s Brennen Bastian, Tom Del Conte, Mark Preedy and Matt Patrick finished third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:29.80).
“We weren’t expecting to place in the top three,” Preedy said. “We were going for the automatic cut for districts (1:31.20). Now we have a lot of confidence because we did that time and we only tapered a little.
“Hopefully we’ll swim a lot faster when we’re fully tapered. It’s nice to swim well at this meet and it was really nice to be in the final heat because that does give you a little push.”
For the girls, Hatboro-Horsham’s Sam Schmitt won the 100 breaststroke (1:05.99), the lone first place finish for the SOL girls.
“I’m so happy with the way I swam,” said Schmitt, a senior. “I’ve been working really hard especially this season because it’s my last and I’m a captain.
“I’m so excited about my time and I was so surprised. It gives me so much confidence. I’m really looking forward to districts this year because I’ve made it to districts all three years and this year I’m really hoping to reach the podium and see how fast I can go.
“A meet like this is so motivating because I like swimming against people I know, and I know so many of the people here and I know how fast they are so it really pushed me and got the best out of me. There were a lot of different teams here and that really spiced it up. It was good competition.”
Also for the Hatters, Barb Schmele took third in the 200 individual medley (2:11.34) and Haley Sutton was third in the 100 backstroke (59.61).
The Hatboro-Horsham medley relay of Sutton, Schmitt, Grace Riemenschneider and Colleen Claggett finished third (1:50.76)
Jenna Johns of Upper Dublin was third in the 100 butterfly (58.33).
Council Rock North’s Rachel Samson, Madison Schluchterer, Beca Segel and Lauren Mitchell finished third in the 400 freestyle relay (3:42.70).
