In a re-match of the District One Dual Meet finals, Quakertown’s 189-pounder Rob Basile and Boyertown’s Zach Heffner met for a second time in the PIAA first round wrestlebacks Friday evening.
Quakertown led the Bears 30-29 heading into the final match at 189. Basile won the first time when he caught Heffner in a headlock, but this time Heffner exacted revenge, at the same time eliminating the Panthers from the state dual meet tournament with a 13-9 decision.
“It was a really good match,” said Quakertown coach Kurt Handel. “It was back and forth. They were throwing each other around. The Boyertown fellow wrestled a good match and didn’t let Robert get in on him.”
Heffner’s win gave Boyertown a 32-30 win, avenging a humiliating 54-16 loss to Quakertown in the District One duals championship.
“That’s the Boyertown team we expected to see all along,” said Handel. “To beat a good team twice is a big task.”
Last year the Panthers didn’t get past the first round, so this year was a step up.
“It was a tough loss tonight, but after things calm down, the kids will look back at this and it’s going to be an amazing experience. It’s something they will never forget their entire lives,” said Handel.
Handel suggested that the team was a bit jittery in its first appearance on the big stage at the Giant Center.
“The second match they came and gave their hardest,” he said.
The highlight of the match was Eric Koch’s 3:54 pin of highly touted Ryan Kemmerer at 140.
“He screwed his hips out to the point where he turned a tilt into a fall,” said Handel. “It was a great match.”
While Handel was disappointed that his team lost both matches, he tried to put a positive spin on it.
“We may have come into an 0-2 barbecue, but the experience is eye opening,” said Handel. “We’re trying to take the positives out of it and move on.”
Council Rock North also lost its wrestleback, dropping a 38-22 decision to District Seven champion Bethel Park.
The Indians had trouble getting wins from their big guns with the exception of Jamie Callender, who won both of his matches.
Council Rock North and Quakertown both lost their first matches. Rock fell to Connellsville 34-24, in the second round, while the Panthers lost to Blue Mountain 38-25 in the quarterfinals. Ironically, the two teams would have met had they won their consolation matches.
