SOL TEAMS AND WRESTLERS IN THE HUNT AT SE REGION
By Glenn Kaiser
Twenty-one Suburban One League wrestlers remain in championship bracket in Saturday morning’s semi-finals in the Southeast Regional at Oxford High School. Additionally, three SOL teams are in the chase for the team title. Pennridge, Council Rock South, and Quakertown are in third, fifth, and sixth place respectfully. Council Rock North is also in the top ten at #10. Pennridge has six semifinalists leading the way, and CR South has four. The Rams’ Micah Visuwan got there in dramatic fashion, winning a 4-3 tiebreaker at 120 pounds in overtime over Kevin Edwars (Avon Grove) in a wild match. Visuwan and Edwards scrambled throughout the overtime periods with questionable no calls; in the end, it was Visuwan escaping for the win.
Pennridge’s tandem of lightweights, Matt Parker (106) and Kordell Rush (123), will look to stamp their tickets to Hershey as expected Saturday morning in the semis. CR North’s Aiden Burke (106) and CR South’s Ben Radner (113) will join them as they take on the #1 seeds in the top half of the brackets. At 126, top-seeded Zack Trampe (CRS) is heading for a showdown with Wade Cummings (Downingtown East) in the finals. At 132, freshman Josh Stillings (Pennridge) edged Boyertown’s J.T. Cooley 1-0 to face Methacton’s Bryce Reddington in the semis. If Riley Barth (CB West) and Colin Shannon (North Penn) can win their semifinal bouts, they would once again square off in the finals at 145 for the third straight week.
Dylan Schwartz (CRS) and Dominic Stabilito (Neshaminy) can do the same at 152 if they can advance in their next matches. Stabilito was on a mission Friday night, knocking off undefeated Dan Iredale (Conestoga) with three throws to post an 18-9 major decision. Two SOL wrestlers will be pitted against one another in the top half of the 160-pound bracket. Number on seed Josh Shalinsky (CRN) will battle Upper Moreland’s Dom DeLaurentis at 170. Number one seed Kyle Gentile (Pennridge) and Quakertown’s Nick Bonomo will wrestle in separate brackets in the 170-pound semifinals. Evan Wilson (CB East) was impressive advancing to the semis at 182 with a dominant performance, posting a tech fall in 2:56 (16-1) over Radnor’s Zak Taylor.
The 195-pound weight class is dominated by SOL wrestlers, with three of the competitors hailing from the SOL. CR South’s #1 seed Ben Kenis will do combat with Upper Moreland’s Patrick Walker, and Quakertown’s Gavin Caroff will meet up with Owen J Roberts’ Xavier Ferizzi. Caroff is coming off an upset win over Coatesville’s Wesley McGuire, as he pinned McGuire in their quarterfinal match in 3:47. Ezra Outlaw (Pennridge) stands alone at 220 and will face the #1 wrestler in the Nation in Boyertown’s Jordan Wood. Bruce Graeber (Neshaminy) will square off with Spring-Ford’s Zach Dorsey, after Dorsey toppled Norristown’s Shaheed Hill in the quarters.
Everyone in the tournament is still alive with hopes of advancing to the Giant Center next week. The PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships will start Thursday, March 5, 2015, at 4 pm, and run through Saturday, March 7, 2015, with the finals at 7 pm. The SE Region will advance the top five wrestlers to Hershey.
