ROCK SOLID
COUNCIL ROCK NORTH & SOUTH ADVANCE TO PIAA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
By Glenn Kaiser
Fort Washington, PA - Council Rock North was rock solid finishing as the runner-up at the 2025 District One Team Championship at Upper Dublin High School Saturday. The Indians were forced to come back from heavy deficits all day, but in the end, they reached the finals with impressive team wins. CR North head coach Mike Diglia seemed to be wrestling every match with his wrestler’s mat side. The entire North team was all in together with their quest to win a D1 Team title, and you could see the intensity and excitement all day with their efforts as they wrestled at a very high level to advance to the state bracket.
#4 North met up with the #5 Oxford Hornets in the quarterfinals and posted a 41-30 victory after trailing 27-5, making the turn to the lightweights after starting at 152-pounds. The Indians recorded six pin-falls on the way back to win rather handily with their tremendous effort from 107 to 145-pounds. They never wavered with the early deficit, knowing they had the firepower to rebound for the win. Every match was critical most of the day for CRN and each individual wrestler was aware of the situation and was duly prepared. Falls were recorded by A.J. Kane (107), Nick Guzzo (114), Marco Loss (127), Pierce Kane (133), Justin Swope (139) and hammer Eren Sement closing it out at 145-pounds. Chase Klein at 160-pounds posted a tech fall during Oxford’s run up top to add to North’s total, Klein has clearly improved and wrestled well all day.
The #1 seed Quakertown dismissed Spring-Ford easily in their quarter bout 44-26 to set-up the SOL battle in the semifinals with CRN. The Indians were in a similar situation, starting at 152-pounds and dropping four matches in a row with the Panther’s Colin Gaj recording his 100th career pin along the way up at 172lbs. Down 18-love, North’s Logan Biederman picked up the Indians and stopped the bleeding with a pin-fall at 285 to start a run of six straight victories to take control of the dual. With Eren Sement lurking near the end of match, it was apparent North would be the victors as he pinned Q-town’s Max Hibsman to put the match away at 145-pounds with the score 29-21 prior in favor of North.
North could not create the same magic against Boyertown in the finals losing 38-25 to a very solid Bears team from the Pioneer Athletic Conference that have been the best dual meet team all year long in District One. Nonetheless, the CR North schedule and experience carried them all the way to the state bracket. On the bottom half of the bracket CR South suffered the same fate, losing to Boyertown in the semis 37-27 after downing Garnet Valley 39-20 in quarterfinal action. South, the defending D1 team champs, rallied with a 39-22 win over a solid Oxford team to meet up with Sun Valley in the consi-finals. South and Sun Valley are no strangers to one another having some fierce battles in the past here and came up with a signature win over the Vanguards 48-21 to move on to the big dance. Pat Woloshyn earned his 100th win against Sun Valley
There was plenty of action all day with big throws, pin-falls and tech falls showcasing D1’s best wrestlers and teams. Both Council Rock North and South will move on with more to prove at the state duals which will feature the best-of-the best. Tuesday will be the day of reckoning for teams to advance to Altoona Friday and Saturday Feb. 7 & 8.
CR North will travel to D-12 champ La Salle (6pm) while CR South will travel to Gettysburg High School to take on D-12’s #2 team - St. Joseph's Prep at 5 pm. The winner of the South/Prep match will wrestle D3 champion Gettysburg at 7 pm with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals in Altoona. The new format is confusing, but nonetheless, keep winning and you advance. Only eight teams will make the trip out West to Altoona HS’s Field House for championship week-end. The state bracket will be released sometime on Sunday so you can map it all out with start times and venues.
