SOL Wrestling: CR South Defeats CR North to Capture Patriot Title

COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH UPENDS CR NORTH
Golden Hawks Prevail In Showdown

By Glenn Kaiser

In typical fashion, Council Rock South seems to have all the right stuff rolling into the postseason, at least for now with the finals of the District One Team Championship coming up this Saturday at Upper Dublin HS.  The Golden Hawks showed their might in a matchup of titans with the Indians Wednesday night.  In this inner school-district matchup with the SOL Patriot title on the line, South dominated their sister school 42-20, winning eight of the 12 contested bouts.  CR South forfeited to North stud Eren Sement up at 160-pounds as both teams juggled their lineups.

Winning nine total matches, with four tech falls and two pins, inflated the win margin in a match that looked to be a very tight one on paper.  South got the best of the moves, whether it was the coin toss or the weigh-ins, the Golden Hawks remain supreme.  Improving to 13-1 and 4-0 in SOL action, they seem primed to repeat as the D1 Team champs.

After the Sement gift of a forfeit to North by South, the Indians only trailed by one, 21-20.  But the Golden Hawks ran off four straight victories from 172 up to 285-pounds.  Ben Brillhart (172) and Gavin Cole (189) moved up from their regular weight classes, securing bonus points with a tech and pin-fall respectively making the team score 32-20, essentially sealing the deal without any misconduct.  However, Matt Scott won by tech fall over Logan Biederman at 215, and big man Jeff Gessner kept his terrific season going to close out the match with another tech fall for the final tally for South.

North was competitive early in the match when A.J. Cane secured a quick fall over Jack Reitter at 107-pounds.  North’s Nick Guzzo battled South’s John Segata but dropped a 1-0 decision at 112.  The Indians got out in front 14-3 with back-to-back wins by Marco Loss (121), and Chase Mancini at 127-pounds.   However, the Golden Hawks stormed back with four consecutive wins and kicked off by Anthony Mutarelli’s tech fall over Pierce Kane 17-0.  Patrick Woloshyn decked Jake Doyle at 139 and the Hawks were flying.  With all the right moves, Kristopher Ortman and Shohjahon Sharifov nailed down wins at 145 and 152 respectively to put South up 21-14 leading up to the forfeit to Sement.

Now both teams will have to regroup and strategize for the quarterfinals of the D1 Duals.  CR South is sitting pretty in the lower half of the bracket with Garnet Valley up first.  They will face either Sun Valley or Boyertown in the semifinals.  Sun Valley comes in hot with a big win over Oxford Wednesday night 40-32.  CR North will battle Oxford in the quarters and will need to navigate their way through a star-studded Hornets line-up, especially in the upper weights to move on.  Nonetheless, they will look to advance and most likely will square up with #1-seed Quakertown in the top-half of the bracket in the other semi should they both get there.  Q-town will grapple Spring-Ford first in the quarters.

The mats will be rocking and rolling early Saturday morning at Upper Dublin with the quarterfinals starting at 8:30am.  Semis are slated for 10am along with the first round of wrestle-backs.  The finals and consi-finals are scheduled for 1pm.  Best of luck to Quakertown, CR North and CR South this weekend as they continue their quests to be D1 team champions.
