SOL Wrestling: CR South Eliminated from State Duals

CR SOUTH GOLDEN HAWKS ELIMINATED FROM STATE DUALS

By Glenn Kaiser

Holland, PA-The Council Rock South (CRS) wrestling team was eliminated Monday evening at the hands of the Central Dauphin (CD) Rams 37-31, dropping eight of 14 bouts.  Both CRS and CD have storied programs, so seeing them square off at the Golden Hawks home gym in a preliminary round of the 2020 PIAA AAA Team Championships just didn’t feel right.  However, it did feel like a lot was at stake for both teams, as with a win one team would advance to Hershey for the first round of the state duals in Hershey, PA.

So, it was game on when the first whistle blew at 160-pounds.  South’s Matt Colajezzi set the tone early for the Golden Hawks, winning by fall with a leg and cross-face on CD’s Ethan Pae.  Lucas Doyle followed with a major decision victory with several takedowns and back points to down Behruz Anvarav at 170lbs to open up a 10-0 lead for the Golden Hawks.  At 182lbs CRS’s Giani Gilch decked Vic Mahmoud with a cradle to extend the lead to 16-love.

However, the deciding moment in this dual may have come with just one-second left in the 195-pound bout when Tim Smith (CD) pinned Brandon Panchinson after Panchinson fought off an early cradle and several other pinning combinations before succumbing to the fall.  The pin got the Rams on the board and gave them life.  CD bumped most of their line-up to get good match-ups, and it paid off as they evened the score before coming back around to the light weights tied 16-16.

South countered with a relentless leg/half combo pin by Cavan Kinne at 106lbs to recapture the lead 22-16 for the Golden Hawks.  However, the Rams won back-to back matches at 113 & 120, reclaiming the lead 26-22.  At 126-pounds Golden Hawks’ stud Kyle Waterman delivered with a cradle to finish off Mike Beers (CD) after the score had been knotted again to push South ahead 28-26.

However, the Rams put two closely fought bouts on their side of the scoreboard at 132 & 138 to pull ahead once again 32-28.  With Cole Flanagan down at 145lbs, it gave South a chance to come back; however, CD had returning state qualifier Tye Weathersby in the wings at 152.  Flanagan was able to pick up a 12-6 decision, but it was not enough to move ahead in the dual.  Weathersby delivered for the Rams with a splendid dump and perfect 15-0 tech fall over Joel Martsinovsky (CRS) to eliminate the Golden Hawks.
