EAST
Quakertown stole the show in their own gymnasium with an astonishing five champions to edge Council Rock South for the team title with 219 points to the Golden Hawks 205.5 points. CR South crowned three individual champions, but the Panthers run of titles in the championships was the difference. Q-town advanced nine wrestlers to the Southeast Region and eight CRS grapplers will make the long haul to the mushroom capital at Oxford High School Friday and Saturday, March 4 & 5.
The Panthers run began at 120-pounds with Mason Ziegler’s head-to-head pin-fall win over the Golden Hawks Ajay Platt, who wrestled extremely well to get to the finals taking out Upper Moreland’s #2 seed Collin Evanson 8-3 in quarterfinal action. Todd McGann cradled up Abington’s Matt McCaughey at 126 to win the title there with a fall in 3:42, securing bonus points again for Quakertown. At 132, freshman phenom Collin Gaj added even more bonus points for the Panthers with his fall over Neshaminy’s Calvin Lederer. Quakertown throttled it up again at 172-pounds with another pin as Calvin Lachman decked North Penn’s Dylan Verway in the first period at 1:03. Big man for the Panthers, Frederick Retter, kept his stellar season going with a D1 East title at heavyweight with his 11-2 major decision over CB East’s Joe Collins 11-2, adding additional team points with the bonus win.
CR South countered with three titles in a row with Matt Colajezzi capping it off at 160-pounds with a tech fall over Pennridge’s talented freshman Talan Hogan 15-love in 5:38 to garner the Outstanding Wrestler award. The Sadriddinov brothers impressed with their crowns at arguably two of the toughest weight classes in the entire region as Shermuhammad and Bekhruz won respectively at 145 and 152-pounds. Shermuhammad needed every second to hold off Abington’s Shane Kibler 3-2 in the ultimate tie breaker at 145-pounds for his title. Bek was solid on his feet, downing an outstanding William Morrow (NP) and winning 4-2 for his crown. Morrow took out returning state qualifier Mason Stein (CBE) 7-5 in his semi, and Bek beat Neshaminy’s Dan Hansbury 12-6 in the other semi at 152. Stein picked up his 100th win at Quakertown as he looks to return to Hershey this season.
Central Bucks East finished third overall in the team race with 137.5 points with one champ in Quinn Collins. Brother Joe was a finalist at 285, but lost to Retter for the silver medal. Council Rock North posted two champs on the podium with freshman Eren Sement taking out his neighbor Luke Reitter (CRS) by tech fall 22-6 at 106. The 106-pound weight class will be exciting at Oxford with CB West’s Teague McCormack and Pennridge’s Colby Martinelli joining a slew of talented lightweights that include Haverford’s Cole McFarland, Ridley’s Curtis Nelson, Downingtown West’s Chase Sigle, along with Spring-Ford’s Gus Smith. The Indians Tony Burke was king at 113 with his 3-2 decision over Pennridge’s Cole Coffin. They could very will meet again next weekend in the finals. Coffin will have to get by S-F stud Cole Smith to make it happen.
Central Bucks West big man kept his journey going with 215-pound title, beating CR South’s Lucas Doyle yet again, this time by major decision 12-4 in the finals. Pennsbury’s Mason Grodzki was the champ at 138-pounds with his 7-2 win over the Golden Hawks Gavin Cole, which put a damper on CR South’s team title hopes. The 126-pound bracket was turned upside down by CR South’s Ben Brillhart’s upset 1-0 win over Pennridge’s Sam Kuhns in the quarterfinals. But Kuhns avenged the loss with a 2-0 decision over Brillhart for the bronze.
