SOL Wrestling Notebook: UD's Jones Reaches 200-Win Milestone

UD coach Dave Jones reached the 200-win milestone on Wednesday night when his team defeated Cheltenham.

UPPER DUBLIN’S DAVE JONES HITS 200-WIN MILESTONE

It wasn’t easy, but in the end Upper Dublin’s mat chief David Jones secured his 200th dual meet win against Cheltenham as a result of his team’s 42-39 win Wednesday evening in SOL American Conference action.  UD had to wait a week for the big win after dropping a 22-45 loss to Hatboro-Horsham Feb. 1, 2017, as Coach Jones shared the moment with his longtime friend and coaching brethren Glenn Kaiser in his last home dual meet win at H-H.  The favor was returned as Coach Kaiser got to share the win with Coach Jones at Cheltenham last night.

Coach Jones, a Wissahickon grad and Lebanon Valley College alum, was a standout wrestler for both.  Jones captained the 1983-84 nationally ranked LVC team in the NCAA Division III ranks and began his coaching career at LVC as an assistant to legendary Hall of Fame Coach Gerald Petrofes.  Jones wrestled with Coach Kaiser and former UD assistant Scott Cousin at LVC where all three were fraternity brothers.  The coaching fraternity in District One and the SOL is strong, and we all congratulate Dave for his achievement, it has been a long road.  Jones came home to the Ambler area from Lancaster to assist Kaiser at UD and took over the helm 17 years ago when Kaiser departed for the H-H position.

Jones is currently assisted by one of Pennsylvania’s most dedicated wrestling gurus in Joe Stabilito, who is PA’s USA Wrestling leader.  Former assistant Tom Hickey who coached with Jones at UD, along with Wissahickon’s head coach Anthony Stagliano all shared memories at the post-win celebration.  Stagliano was the head coach at UD prior to Kaiser.

Jones was certainly sweating out capturing the big win, as time was running out in the dual meet season, but his wrestlers stepped up with big bonus points to secure the victory at Cheltenham.  The Flying Cardinals got five falls from Elijah Peck (106), Alex Bonczkiewicz (126), Jackson Rock (138), Mason Novak (160), and Rocco DeSimone at 220-pounds.  DeSimone clinched the win with the pin as UD was forfeiting the last bout at 285-pounds.  The Flying Cardinals never trailed in the match, but the Panthers kept it close all night, closing the gap to 36-33 after UD forfeited the 195-pound match to the Chelts Shamar Browne with the only contested bout left between DeSimone and Gregg Hennix (Cheltenham) at 220.  DeSimone finished the job in the second period at 3:12 to post the win for Coach Jones and the celebration began.

In other action:  Quakertown finished the season perfect in their new conference, going 7-0 in dual meet action and capturing the SOL American crown with a win over Wissahickon 58-12.  North Penn was perfect in the Continental downing CB East 51-20 and winning back-to-back conference championships.  Council Rock South, the National Champs battle Cannon MacMillan tonight in the Giant Center (Hershey, PA) at 6 pm in the first round of the PIAA (AAA) Team Championships.
