SOL Wrestling: Quakertown & CR South Advance to PIAA Team Championships

Quakertown and Council Rock South Advance to 200 PIAA AAA Team Championships

By Glenn Kaiser

Fort Washington, PA - #1 seed Quakertown and #2 seed Council Rock South both advanced to the 2020 PIAA Team Championship by placing 2nd and 3rd respectively at the District One AAA Duals.  Quakertown fell short in the finals in their quest to win the D1 title, losing to mighty Spring-Ford 39-22.  Nonetheless, the Panthers will be in Hershey Thursday to wrestle Erie Cathedral Prep, the District 10 Champion.

Council Rock South had to wrestle-back to get into the state duals, winning their consolation semifinal match handily over Owen J Roberts 56-15.  The Golden Hawks 67-12 demolition of Garnet Valley propelled them to a third place finish and a preliminary home dual versus Central Dauphin, the third place team from D3, Monday evening at 6:00pm.

Quakertown was unable to keep pace with Spring-Ford, and only led at one time in the dual (17-15) after Vinny DeSpirito won by tech fall 26-11 over the Rams’ Gus Carfagno at 126-pounds.  The Panthers only won five of the 14 contested bouts.  Kyle Miller sparked Quakertown with a :20-second fall at 120lbs prior to DeSpirito’s tech.

Spring-Ford’s Quinn Tobin (132) and Zach Needles (138) basically decided the match in the middle as Tobin downed Zack Lewis (Q-town) 8-2 before Needles caught Dom DeFalco in a cradle and secured a fall.  The pin ignited the Rams bench, and they never looked back, winning three of the last five bouts.  The Panthers’ Patrick McCoy notched a 5-0 decision over Alex Johns (S-F) at 145 and Micah Kunkle decisioned Gavin Hartman (S-F) 8-2 to close out the match.  Jeremy McGuigan tossed Spring-Ford’s Sean Brogan for a first period fall for the other Panther victory.  McGuigan upped his record to 35-6 in his first-year wrestling as a senior.

Council Rock South showed they were not done after losing to Spring-Ford in the semifinals 34-25 as they stormed back in the consolations, easily earning their spot in the state duals.  The Golden Hawks were nearly flawless, winning 10 of 14 matches in their dual with Owen J and 12 of 14 in the Garnet match.  If CR South can get by Central Dauphin Monday at home, they will advance to Chocolate Town, USA, Thursday to wrestle Waynesburg (D7-1st).

Both Quakertown and CR South will have their hands full in both first-round action and preliminary action, but don’t count either out to win a match or two in the tournament.  Currently, Quakertown is ranked 9th by PA Power and CRS 10th.  The Golden Hawks finished fourth in these championships in 2019.
