SOL Wrestling: Quakertown Defeats CR South In Battle of District Powers

QUAKERTOWN TAKES IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Panthers Down Mighty Council Rock South 36-20

By Glenn Kaiser

I cannot tell you when the last time a Suburban One League team defeated the Council Rock South wrestling team because it has been so long, but I can tell you Quakertown is the first team to take them down in 2020.  In perhaps a changing of the guard or a shift in power, the Panthers were able to outwrestle the Golden Hawks, securing a convincing 36-20 victory.

But don’t count CR South out of anything.  As the PIAA Team Championships start officially, with round one of the D1 Duals just two weeks from today on Thursday Jan, 23, 2020.  And for sure, both these teams will be in contention to win the D1 crown.  The Golden Hawks loss comes on the eve of their SOL National showdown with CR North tonight in their home gym.

Quakertown remained undefeated with the win and improved to 8-0 overall. The Panthers will ride the momentum of the victory into their own Quakertown Duals this Saturday.

CR South’s Cole Flanagan returned to the mats for the Golden Hawks at 152-pounds (match started at 152lbs) to kick start South early in the dual with a 6-1 decision over the Panthers’ Aaron Sanchez.  The Golden Hawks won five consecutive matches to open up a 17-0 lead and seemed to be cruising to victory.

However, the lack of bonus points - they secured only two major decisions along with three decisions in the five-match stretch - was noticeable.  Joel Martsinovsky (CRS) downed Kye Goodwin (Q-town) 14-3 at 160-pounds and Matt Colajezzi (CRS) beat Dusten Pompei (Q-town) 14-3 at 170-pounds.

The Panthers turned the tide and upped their level of competitiveness, finally getting on the board at 220-pounds as Ralph Martin secured a 3-0 win over South’s Brandon Berghaier.  The Panthers rattled off five wins of their own coming around to the lightweights as they recorded three falls in that stretch.  Jeremy McGuigan (285), Todd McGann (113) and Kyle Miller (120) all secured pins for Quakertown as they took the lead in the dual 24-17.

The most prominent victory was freshman Zach Borzio’s 6-0 shut-out of the Golden Hawks Cavan Kinne at 106-pounds.  Borzio established himself as a contender at 106lbs with the win over a talented Kinne.  South’s stud Kyle Waterman was able to notch a win over Vinny DeSpirito (Q-town) at 126-pounds to deter the Panthers’ momentum and get to within four points with the score 24-20 in Quakertown’s favor.

However, that would be all of the scoring for the Golden Hawks, as Quakertown closed out the match with three-straight victories from their trio of talented grapplers Zack Lewis (132), Dom DeFalco (138) and Patrick McCoy (145).  Lewis downed a dangerous Mohammed Savriddinov (CRS) without allowing Savriddinvov to score a point, 6-0.  DeFalco secured the Panthers’ win with hard fought 8-6 victory over South’s Tom Woloshyn, closing the door with the score 30-20.

Pat McCoy then put the icing on the cake for Quakertown at 145-pounds with an emphatic first period fall over Brian Adams in just 36-seconds.  Quakertown will surely grab a top-four seed in the D1 Team Championships with the victory.  Nonetheless, CR South will also be considered a top four team with their early season victory over a powerful Spring-Ford team.

Tonight’s match between Council Rock North and South, essentially for the SOL National title, may very well dictate the seeding in D1 as CR North is also considered a top contender.  If you want to see some of the best wrestlers in the state, get out to CR South’s gym this evening for a mammoth dual meet here in the Southeast Region.
