SOL Wrestling: Quakertown the Real Deal (1-31-20)

QUAKERTOWN THE REAL DEAL

By Glenn Kaiser

Fort Washington, PA-The Quakertown wrestling team punched their ticket to Hershey for the 2020 PIAA Team Championship by obliterating the field thus far in District One.  The Panthers, seeded #1, remained undefeated this season, added two more wins to their 18-0 record as they crushed both Neshaminy 48-15 and Garnet Valley 53-9.  The Panthers will face #3 Spring-Ford out of the Pioneer Athletic Conference in the finals Saturday at Upper Dublin H.S. (Finals 3:00pm).

In the quarterfinals Quakertown took on #7 Neshaminy in what looked like the feature bout of the quarters matches.  However, Q-town quickly established themselves as the team to beat this weekend as they rattled off nine straight wins from 220 to 152-pounds versus the ‘Skins.  The match started at 195lbs, and Neshaminy’s Jack Toy drew first blood with a 10-4 decision over Freddie Retter.  Then the Panthers went on a tear, posting a 48-3 lead before the ‘Skins would strike again, but it was long lost by then.

Heavyweight Jeremy McGuigan sparked the Quakertown squad with a huge toss and pin fall of Neshaminy’s Zack Magdelinskas in the first period of their match at 285.  With the match coming back around to the lightweights, it was more of the same as both Zach Borzio (106) and Todd McGann (113) notched pins, making it three in a row and a 21-3 led for the Panthers.  Vinny DeSpirito recorded a fall at 126-pounds as well.   Zack Lewis added a tech fall at 132, and Aaron Sanchez at major decision at 152.  Scoring bonus points in seven of ten victories indicated the strength of these Quakertown grapplers and the talent of the group up and down the line-up.

With the win, the Panthers moved into the top half semifinal to face off with upstart and upset minded #13 Garnet Valley.  Garnet had already dismissed #4 Council Rock North in first round action and #5 Owen J Roberts in their quarterfinal match 32-30.  The Jaguars were no match for the Panthers.  Quakertown won eleven bouts and scrapped in the other three matches, losing by a combined eight points in those bouts.

It was a pin-fest early for Q-town as Ralph Martin started it off at 220-pounds and McGuigan (285) and Borzio (106) made it three straight out of the gate.  Dom DeFalco (138), Kyle Goodwin (160) and Freddie Retter (195) notched pins as well ending Garnet’s run in the championship bracket.

#2 Council Rock South downed #10 Interboro 52-15 in the quarters but could not keep pace with S-F in the semis, losing 34-26 in their second battle this season.  The Golden Hawks won 34-31 back on December 11, 2019.  South will compete in the consolation semifinals at 1:00pm today against Owen J Roberts for a spot in the preliminary rounds of the state duals which kick-off this coming Monday.
