SOL Wrestling: Robinson Escapes the Rock With Belt

ROBINSON ESCAPES THE ROCK WITH BELT

By Glenn Kaiser

Council Rock North’s Cam Robinson garnered the championship belt at 152-pounds Sunday evening at CR South’s Escape the Rock tournament.  He did it with a late takedown over Hatboro-Horsham’s A.J. Tamburrino, winning 4-2.  Robinson and Tamburrino will continue their rivalry over the next two months as they will surely battle all the way to Hershey, and possibly meet with a state title on the line when they complete the 2019-20 wrestling season.   But for now, Robinson remains unbeaten against his rugged foe.

Tamburrino used a reversal in the third period to take a short lived 2-1 lead before Robinson scored his second escape of the match, he got to neutral from the bottom after choosing bottom in the second period.  Robinson was able to get in on Tamburrino late in the third period on a deep single leg.  Tamburrino fought it off furiously, getting extended as he tried to get his foot back to the mat when Robinson completed the takedown, near the buzzer, to be crowned ETR champ.

Tamburrino’s teammate Logan Flynn (H-H) captured fourth place at 220-pounds after wrestling back to the bronze medal (plaque) match.  Flynn could not get his offense going against Adam Young from Shikellamy, losing 4-1.  Flynn was outstanding over the two-day event, wrestling more like a middleweight, with a barrage of takedowns and back-points on his way to the consolation finals.  His only other loss over the weekend was to eventual 220lb champ Kyonte Hamilton from Maryland’s Georgetown Prep in the quarterfinals.

Robinson’s teammates Luke Lucerne (126), Sammy Hayes (145), Dillon Sheehy (160) and heavy weight Max Harrar all medaled for CR North.  Sheehy won the consolation bracket, edging Del Val’s Machias Magill 3-2 for third place.  Lucerne was sixth, Harrar 7th and Hayes 8th to put the Indians just out of the top-10 in the team race, as they finished 11th overall with 78.5 points.  And they did it without superstar Kyle Hauserman. With Hauserman in the tourney, they easily would have had a top-10 finish as a team.

Neshaminy’s Gunnar Spain continued his stellar season with an eighth place showing at 170-pounds along with teammate Jason Pascucci, 8th at 182lbs.  Quakertown’s emerging heavy weight Jeremy McQuigan finished 5th with a victory over District One foe Matt Micale (Downingtown West) by fall in 5:55.

The action was fierce and non-stop all weekend long, and the results should be a preamble for some to what’s to come, and for others an experience like no other in preparation for the upcoming postseason team and individual championships.
