COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH SENDS MESSAGE

By Glenn Kaiser

Royersford, PA-Forget about Council Rock South being down, reloading or let alone rebuilding.  It will take a mighty effort for any team in District One to dethrone the reigning D1 Team Champions.  The Golden Hawks followed up their 4th place team finish at the Cumberland Valley Classic this past weekend with the same individual, man-for-man effort as they downed Spring-Ford Wednesday evening 34-31.

In one of the top dual meet match-ups in the region as you’ll get, CR South was determined to remain on top.  There was no doubt from the first match to the last that South was going to battle for every point and scrap with a rugged and accomplished Spring-Ford Ram team. And their efforts were rewarded with an opening dual meet victory that will be noticed around the region.

The Golden Hawks traveled to Spring-Ford High School for the second edition of this fast developing non-league rivalry.  And the result was a road win that may have many scratching their heads.  How could a team that graduated six seniors last year, five of them state qualifiers and three of them state place winners, beat an up and coming program that was second to CR South in last year’s district dual finals?  The answer is simple - the next man up mentality of the Golden Hawks was present and prevailing, a true trademark of a proven winner.

Many around the wrestling community here in the Southeast Region believe this is the year that CRS will be tracked downed and surpassed by a couple of teams here, one being the Spring-Ford Rams.  But not now and maybe not at all.  There is still their neighborhood rival Council Rock North and the PAC’s Owen J Roberts who could do it, but for now it is the Golden Hawks who remain in front and atop the District.

The Hawk’s Tom Woloshyn, the brother of Eric Woloshyn , who graduated in 2019 as a state qualifier, started things off on the right foot at 138-pounds with a fall over the Rams’ Jayden Dawson, decking Dawson in 1:33 of the first period.  It was noted early on in this match-up of two power teams that bonus points would be the difference in the dual meet, and the Golden Hawks grabbed the first ones out of the gate.  Bonus points were tallied by CR South’s Joel Martsinovsky at 160 with a fall and a major decision by Matt Collajezzi at 170 to give the Golden Hawks a 16-9 lead they would need heading into the upper weights.

However, after a Giani Gilch hard fought victory, at 195-pounds, with a late takedown over Louie Carbajal (S-F) 3-1, Brendan Panchinson recorded the most important bonus points of the match with a decking of Donnie Nicoline (S-F) early in the third period.  Panchinson reversed Nicoline to his back while trailing in the match for a stunning fall that erupted the Golden Hawks bench.  Panchinson had a similar result over Nicolie at the Cumberland Valley Classic this past weekend and replicated the outcome for six gigantic points for South and a 25-15 lead.

Cavan Kinne kept the 10-point (28-18) lead for South at 106 with a hard fought 4-0 decision over Spring-Ford’s talented freshman Cole Smith, 4-0.  The Rams tied the team totals at 28-all at 120-pounds after Quinn Smith posted a :45 second fall over Shane Munz.  But state champion hopeful and 2019 6th place finisher Kyle Waterman sealed the deal for CRS with second period fall over Gus Carfagno in 2:55 in surgical fashion.  Quinn Tobin had a chance for the Rams to tie the match with a fall over South’s Mohammed Savriddinov in the final bout of the evening.  But Savriddinov scored an early takedown before Tobin was able to notch a 4-3 win that wasn’t enough to catch the Golden Hawks.

So it is another season and another win for Council Rock South.  Can anyone turn the tide on the Golden Hawks is the real question about this team….
