HATBORO-HORSHAM RALLIES TO DOWN WISSAHICKON
By Glenn Kaiser
Ambler, PA-The Hatboro-Horsham Wrestling Warriors made the short trip to Ambler to grapple with the Trojans of Wissahickon on Wednesday night. This was to be a battle for the SOL American Conference if you glanced over the schedule in the preseason. But after slow-starts by both Wissahickon (1-6), the reigning conference champions, and H-H (1-1), their biggest challenger on paper, it appeared to be just another neighborly dual meet in the SOL.
Surprisingly, H-H dropped its opening match of the season to Plymouth-Whitemarsh after high expectations coming into the 2019-20 season to finally conquer the SOL American. And Wissahickon did the same, unexpectedly losing to Upper Moreland in their opener. Subsequently, the Trojans dropped four of five matches over the weekend at the Abington Ghost Town Duals.
To add to their misery, Abington is off to a hot start improving to 9-1 overall Wednesday night downing Upper Moreland 64-9 and looking to be in control of the conference. But if you were mat side Wednesday night at Wissahickon, you would not have known, as both the H-H and Wissahickon came out guns a blazing like the match was for the league title. And time will tell if it was as both teams seemed to get back on track in this ongoing rivalry.
H-H came out strong early at 120-pounds as Michael Long decked Wissahickon’s Mirahn Alshamy at 2:50 of the second period to post all important bonus points and put the Hatters up 6-love. But after a forfeit by H-H, Wissahickon jumped ahead with Alex Preiston’s fall at 132 after trailing in his match with Joe Martini, III. Sammy Smith (H-H) quickly tied it up with a fall in 1:54 at 138-pounds, and it was game on. The pinning didn’t stop as Matt Fritz (Wissahickon) recorded a fall at 145 and William Tennent transfer, A.J. Tamburrino returned the favor for H-H at 152, making quick work of Owen Dowling in 1:45 of the first period to tie the team score at 18-all. Thus, the fireworks show was heating up.
In a toss-up bout at 160-pounds, Wissahickon’s Nathanael Chez scored late back points at the buzzer to post up bonus points with his 9-0 victory. Kevin Salmon followed his teammate with a hard fought 6-3 victory over a solid Jake Wood (H-H) to extend the Trojans lead to 25-18, while gaining momentum for the team. However, H-H’s C.J. Grier returned to the mat at 182-pounds after sitting out the P-W match, in dramatic fashion, hitting a splendid lateral drop to dispose of Erwin Prado in just 19 seconds to swing the momentum back to the Hatters. The fall brought H-H back in to the match only trailing 24-25 heading to 195.
Wissahickon did not fold, as Max Pester upset the Hatters’ Hunter Long with a stunning pin with a headlock, and Dan Barbosa added a quick pin for the Trojans at 220 to what appeared to put away the Hatters with a 13-point lead with Dan Keller taking to the mat at heavyweight.
Keller, a returning state qualifier, bumped up from his normal 220lb spot to take on H-H’s rugged Logan Flynn. This one was worth the price of admission, and the fireworks finale was about to begin. Flynn used solid defense to spin behind Keller on three leg attacks that resulted in an 8-0 lead. Keller was determined to not give up the major and give the Hatters a chance at a comeback, thus he escaped and it was Flynn that needed some offense to secure the major. Flynn was successful finding an opening for a shot, and completed a double leg finish to garner the bonus points with a 10-1 victory.
With two bouts left, the Hatters would need a fall and major victory, with Wissahickon holding the tie-breaking criteria of most falls, to win the dual. Hatter freshman Orion Newell showed his promise with a second period fall at 106-pounds to keep the comeback alive for H-H, now trailing 34-37. Shubham Railkar in his first match ever for the Hatters took to the mat with the outcome on the line at 113-pounds.
Railkar did not disappoint in his first outing with a first period fall with a tight half to complete the comeback at giving H-H a well needed victory 40-37 after the smoke cleared.
