COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH DOMINATE IN WIN OVER QUAKERTOWN
GOLDEN HAWKS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT DUAL 40-19
By Glenn Kaiser
Holland, PA - Council Rock South (3-0) wrestlers primed for Beast of the East with their lopsided win over Quakertown Wednesday evening. CR South first-year Head Coach, Trey Balasco is pleased with his team’s early success. With a big weekend ahead for both CR South and Quakertown at the Beast of the East on the campus of the University of Delaware, CRS remained dominant and unbeaten in dual action. In this SOL friendly match between the top teams in the Liberty (Q-town) and the Patriot (CRS), it is clear the top team in all of District One is CR South.
The Golden Hawks won nine of 13 bouts, defeating a solid Quakertown (0-1) team 40-19. South added bonus points in six of their wins with three falls, a tech-fall and two major decisions.
Despite Quakertown’s defending state champion Colin Gaj opening with a 51-second fall at 152-pounds where the match started, the Panthers could not stop CR South from rolling in this one. The Golden Hawks ran off four straight wins from 160 through 215-pounds before mighty Calvin Lachman pinned South’s Jeff Gessner in the heavyweight division to put Q-town back in the match trailing 15-12. However, as the match turned to the lightweights, Eddie Alvarez (CRS) posted a major decision at 107-pounds, and Connor Lenahan (CRS) notched a pin at 114lbs. to push the Golden Hawks lead to 25-12. Quakertown’s Mason Ziegler, last year’s state runner-up stopped South’s momentum briefly with major decision over talented Luke Reitter 14-2 at 121-pounds. Ziegler was in control the entire match. But Pat Woloshyn (CRS) dominated Isaac Williams in the 127lb. bout, posting an 11-2 major and thwarting any comeback aspirations by Q-town.
The door was shut on Quakertown at 133-pounds as South’s Anthony Mutarelli was surgical, executing a perfect tech-fall 16-0 over Q-town’s Logan Pfistner with tremendous offense from the top position. The final match of the evening featured two top wrestlers at 145-pounds between Gavin Carroll (Q-town) and Ben Brillhart (CRS). Carroll secured a takedown, winning 6-4 in the third-period after Brillhart battled back into the match. Both teams have star power up and down their lineups, and many of them are projected to be state place-winners come March up in Hershey. CR South seems to have one of their most balanced teams of late, as they are solid up and down their lineup.
South’s Bek Sadriddinov (172) and Ajay Bhatt (139) recorded falls for the Golden Hawks to pad the score for the Golden Hawks in this featured early season dual. CR South has dominated foes on their feet but have been especially strong on top, racking up back-points which have led to many bonus points so far this season. The Beast will be a test for all of the outstanding wrestlers from both these teams as they head down to Delaware to wrestle the best of the best.
