The Souderton doubles team of Kevin DeRosa and Jason Everett won the SOL Continental Conference Doubles Tournament last week.
Seniors Kevin DeRosa and Jason Everett, Souderton’s first and second singles players, made history when they won the SOL Continental Conference Doubles Tournament last Friday at The Tennis Zone.
“Kevin and Jason are both very strong on their own playing singles, but when they team up to make a doubles team, they bring a strength to each other that is difficult to beat,” said coach Wendy Bradshaw, who believes the duo may be Souderton’s first ever doubles champions. “They were doubles partners as freshmen, so even though they both played singles the last two years, they work very well with each other.”
In the first round, DeRosa and Everett, seeded second heading into the tournament, defeated Pennridge’s Max Heckler and Jessie Herb 6-2, 6-3. In the second round, they downed North Penn’s Dan Tsai and Gabe Flores in a tightly contested match, 7-6 (7-3 TB), 6-2. They went on to defeat Central Bucks East’s Keith Wiley and Connor Funk 6-4, 6-2, and in the championship match, they downed Pennridge’s Chanton Phan and ChanDat Phan, the tournament’s top-seeded duo, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
This year’s championship came on the heels of a third place finish last year.
“They both had really strong serving that was difficult to break and really great net play,” Bradshaw said. “They had been practicing as a doubles team all season long, even though they play singles, in order to give our doubles teams some fierce competition.
“They have worked really hard, both playing varsity all four years, so it was wonderful to see them finish their season with a league championship.”
