Amanda Yang admits she surprised herself.

On Thursday, Souderton’s soft-spoken freshman captured the SOL Colonial Division Singles Tournament title.

“I had pretty low expectations coming in, so I’m kind of surprised right now,” she said. “I feel pretty happy and overwhelmed.”

Yang is hardly a stranger to competitive tennis. She has been playing tennis since was eight or nine and is a veteran of the Middle States circuit, but that doesn’t mean she wasn’t nervous heading into Thursday’s championships.

“I’m always kind of nervous, and then when I start playing, I feel better,” Yang said.

In Thursday’s title match, the Souderton freshman defeated North Penn’s Kaveena Ponamgi (6-1, 6-1), avenging a regular season loss to the Knights’ standout in a third match tiebreaker.

“I feel like this time I was dictating the points more,” Yang said.

Yang notched an opening round win over North Penn’s Adlena Washington-Brown, and in the semifinals defeated Cynthia Hu from Central Bucks West.

The key to success, according to Yang, was simple.

“I feel like I had to play pretty consistent,” she said. “When I had the chance, I had to attack it.”

Yang will advance to the District One 3A Tournament.
